Now Or Never More

Lungs burning

from air scorched dry;

if I don’t get moving

here I’m going to die.

Eyes streaming;

I have no doubt

that this is my last chance

to make an escape.

It’s now or never,

no time to wait

as the smoke swirls,

The stench; acrid cordite,

sulfurous fumes -

this place is truly

hell on Earth.

Got to keep on going

past the burnt out shells

of wrecks and rubble,

towards the water,

so near, so far.

Eyes fixed firmly on boats

of every size and shape,

desperately looking for

a way to escape,

when a roar of engines overhead

causes a stumble,

a fall,

and the loss of all that

validated my existence.

My identity is gone.

I’m a no one in a no man’s land,

crawling forwards,

reaching out.

At last the coolness of water

and a SPLASH!

Plunging into the churning sea,

it’s either sink or swim,

now or never more.
