Something strange is going on with Jake when he woke up one day in the morning. But where it leads...

Six

1

Somewhere in the apartment.

The room was quiet and dark. No light, except the clock with the huge digits on it.

Still morning. The season was closer to winter, so the morning was not hurrying to come.

Only one thing could be noticed exactly is that the clock was seeming like joggling with the digits. From 0 to 59 and then again and again. The minutes were changing, switching hours one after another.

2

05:59

Blink-blink-blink

06:00

The alarm clock raise up with a high pitched noise, like a fire alarm siren in the abandoned catacombs.

“Ooooooooh, not again!”, the male voice interrupted the silence, piercing it through like a knife through the butter.

Jake Sanders was lying on his bed trying to silence the noise with a cushion pushed right to his ears.

Time to get up, he thought. It was like a command to his body from the brain. But it didn’t work out.

Why it is so difficult all the time, huh?

He lied approximately fifteen minutes staring at the black ceiling while he finally got up from his bed.

Jake sit and swiped the face with palms and looked around at his apartment.

Better to turn the light on.

The switch was on the wall, but in the complete darkness it was very hard to notice.

Jake moved his hand into the direction where he assumed the switch was located. When he noticed that it was not there, he giggled.

“Where are you?” A smile appeared on his face.

A few more attempts and…

“Gotcha”, Jake exclaimed. The room was filled in with light. It was so bright all the time that felt like the eyes were cutting out with the small needles. Jake raise a hand to close the face and rubbed the eyes with another.

He yawned and stretched up and down then to the sides, to the left, to the right.

Finally woke up? Nah, I’m going to take a cup of coffee.

He moved in the direction of a kitchen barely making his feet off the ground.

The kitchen was small but cosy. Not much to say about it. It had a table, two chairs. In the corner was located microwave and other kitchen stuff.
Jake came to the TV set and turned it on.

“Let’s check what you got, bro.”

An image appeared on the screen with some kind of a reporter on it.

“Boring.” Jake switched the channel. “What’s next?”

“There are a lot of species in the wild nature…”, announcer said.

“Oh, really? Very interesting”

Click

“Today is a great day…”, announcer said.

“Oh, I can agree on that” Jake giggled and went to turn the kettle on.

He took a cup off the kitchen box where it was standing and put in some coffee, he loved the most.

“What a scent, huh?” He made a deep breath once again to feel the aroma right inside of him.

“This is great.” A smile appeared on his face with a dozen of teeth afore. “A cup of a great coffee, what else can make a day in thousands times better.”

Ring-ring-ring

His service phone rang. It was lying on the cushion of a sofa with the enlightened screen.

“Yes, exactly.” He threw a glance at the phone. That was one of that glances which symbolises the lion that is going to hunt on the prey right now.

He picked up and did’t even make a sound to say “hello”.

“Hey, Jake, it’s Manny. Was-sup man, we need you today. Hope that you’re in shape.” A male voice was talking from the phone.

“Hey, Man. I’m doing fine. On my way.”

“That’s good, J. Don’t let them wait, ok?”

“Sure. I won’t disappoint. You know me.”

“Yeah, see you in a while.”

“We will. Bye.” He ended up the call and threw the phone on the coach.

Ok. Time to move.

Jake visited the rest room, shaved and used his favourite cologne.

In a short instant Jake was ready, in the light grey suit he was wearing a watch.

07:45

The street was already busy. Everyone’s hurrying somewhere.

There is no need in using car today.

Traffic jam. And it seemed that there was no end to it. The cars were moving so close to each other that to go past them was very hard even if you’re thin.

So this is good if you can walk and don’t need a car in such time like this, because the thing is obvious that to get in time will be a difficult task.

He was moving down the Brenton Street, cars were horning. Sellers were already in places.

A man walked past Jake, staring at his cellphone, checking his schedule.

A woman appeared from the corner, wearing a slightly brown coat with gloves almost the same colour, maybe the tint was a little bit not similar.

She moved easily and seemed that not even touched the ground. Spectating all around she stopped. Her glance was attached to the mannequin with a beautiful red skirt that was glistening from the lights that were shining from behind. It was a cherish red. The colour that catches your eyes and never let them go.

The woman was wondering a moment, then looked down on the shoes that were standing right next to the mannequin, but below.

“Mmmmm, very interesting”, she said aloud.

Maybe she’s looking for something extraordinary. Jake thought.

After these words she continued walking and entered the shop.

The street was already crowded at this time. People were moving like a shop queues one by one with all their suitcases, laptops, phones and other things.

From time to time there were a couple of beggars sitting right on the ground who were trying to survive.

Also a couple of road workers were trying to block the road for their needs. They were moving a little barricade to put it ahead to provide enough room for their service.

Everything was telling from each corner that the street was busy.

4

Hey, catch him! Thief! Don’t let him get away!!!”, shouted someone from behind.

Everyone was astonished with this. People were too sleepy or what, but at least they were turning to the upcoming sound.

There was a man, a man in a hood. He was running fast pushing aside crowd on the way.

The thief didn’t care whether it’s a woman or man. He pushed a young woman on the ground, she fell and didn’t even have a time to protect herself from falling.

A lot of people were pushed but no one cared about what happened.

Jake moved carefully and only looked around from time to time. He saw the man coming on the high speed, closer and closer.

He heard about what happened and saw people that were not that lucky, who were pushed on the ground.

The man in a hood was closer and closer.

In an instant of time the thief was right behind and pushed Jack in a shoulder.

Jack didn’t pay much attention on that.

Let police do their job.

He saw the man running away behind the corner and totally disappearing in the crowd.

Jake turned on the Sharon Street.

5

He was moving down the Sharon Street. The phone rang.

Jake checked the phone.

Michelle

He was holding a phone for a minute not answering, not because didn’t want to answer, but to let the people that were moving on him to pass him by. Finally the call was answered.

“Yes, Michelle. It’s Jake.”

“Hey, Jake. How are you? Didn’t call you yesterday. Didn’t want to interrupt.”

“Don’t worry, I’m alright. Was just busy with all the mess around, you know. All the problems. I visited Frank yesterday, maybe you know him. I didn’t tell you much about him.”

He looked around on the street and stepped over the puddle beneath his feet.

“He’s a collector. You should know better than me about this things, right?”

“Uhu”, she answered and continued listening.

“So, he invited me to see ‘The best collection in your life’, that’s how he called it. Weird, right?”

The car horned on the street.

Two women were sitting in the cafe drinking a cup of coffee. The waiter was serving them.

“I was so surprised, that he called me yesterday.” Jake said with a smile that appeared on the face.

“This is so nice.” A natural interest could be noticed in the Michelle’s voice.

“Right? I thought about this too.”

“How was it? Did you like it?” Michelle asked.

“Of course I did! They invited me… Why I’m saying ‘they’, you would ask. He was with his wife Felicia. They prepared a very delicious supper. Have you ever tried lobsters in your life? But think good and tell me the truth.”

“Hold on, give me a sec… No, as far as I know myself.”

“No? Michelle, you have to fix this ‘terrible’ mistake someday.”

“But this is not the main thing that they had shown me afterwards.”

“We got only fresh news. Check this out.” A seller was yelling aloud.

“Sorry”, Jake apologised for a loud noise.

“Don’t worry.”

“They had shown me a huge gallery. It was really huge, believe me.”

“I believe you.”

He stopped at the crossroads.

The light on the traffic light was forbidding to go.

Jake noticed a woman standing on the other side of the road.

She was very attractive.

The woman was wearing a jacket, a blue skirt and a hat. Their eyes met.

The colour of the traffic light changed and the crowd started to move. They were moving in the direction of each other. Their gaze attached.

Jake smiled a bit while he was talking by the phone.

They were almost close. Almost at the same line.

A swish of tires…

CRASH

6

Jake opened his eyes.

“Call the ambulance”, people were shouting.

“There are victims!”

“Call the police now!”

“People, get out of the way! Step aside!”

He was lying on the ground. Everything around was in the mist. And there was blood. A lot of blood stains.

He looked up and saw a woman, that woman. She was lying unconscious on the sour ground. Dead.

Then nothing… Black.

7

Alarm clock was ringing in the apartment.

06:00

Complete darkness, no signs of movement around.

The alarm was turned off. Jake woke up and sit on the bed.

“What the…?”

What was that?

A dream?

A nightmare?

So many questions…

He got up and turned on the lights. The light filled in the apartment.

Jake went to the restroom and looked into the mirror. His face was ok. Eyes were ok, no signs of hallucinations or something. He washed the face with a cold water and went out to the kitchen.

“Alright Jake, you’re not insane. Even though you’re talking to yourself right now.”

He took a pill of aspirin and swallowed it.

Ring-ring-ring

His service phone rang.

Jake picked it up and answered the call.

“Hello.” Jake said in an unsure voice.

“Hey, Jake, it’s Manny. Was-sup man, we need you today. Hope that you’re in shape.” A male voice said.

Jake was stunned with that.

“Are you here J?”

What is that? It’s like in that dream.

“Yeah”, he answered after a short delay.

“You feeling good, man? What’s with your voice?”

“I’m ok, don’t worry ‘bout me. Everything is fine. Thanks.”

“That’s good, J. Don’t let them wait, ok?”

“Don’t worry, I won’t disappoint.”

“Yeah, see you in a while.”

“Of course we will. Thank you, Manny. Bye.” He ended up the call and threw the phone on the cushion.

This is so weird.

Maybe I could take a break or some kind of a day off for today. But they are waiting for me. I can’t. Can’t make them waiting for me so long. I already said that I’d come.

He visited the rest room, shaved and used his favourite cologne.

In a couple of minutes Jake was ready, in the light grey suit he picked a watch.

The street was already crowded. People hurrying. The cars were standing in the huge traffic jam close to one another.

He went along the Brenton Street. Cars were horning. Sellers were already working. A man walked past Jake, staring at his cellphone, checking his schedule. And then Jake saw her. A woman in a brown coat with brown gloves that was not as brown as the coat, just a little bit another tint.

The woman stopped in the front of the same shop, her gaze was attached to the mannequin with a cherry red skirt.

The woman was wondering a moment, then looked down on the shoes that were standing right next to the mannequin, but below.

“Mmmmm, very interesting”, she said aloud.

It cannot be. Jake thought.

After these words she continued walking and entered the shop.

I don’t believe it.

He moved further, beggars were sitting on the ground.

A couple of road workers were trying to block the road. They were moving a little barricade to put it ahead to provide enough room for their service.

The street was busy.

9

Hey, catch him! Thief! Don’t let him get away!!!”, shouted someone from behind.

People were sleepy and didn’t care much about that.

It was a man. A man in a hood. He was running down the street, pushing everyone aside, didn’t care much about whether that was a man or a woman.

Jake heard about the man who was approaching from behind. He was looking behind several times. And yeah, it was right the same man that pushed him previous time in his dream.

The man in the hood pushed Jake and run past him, disappearing behind the corner.

Jake, you let him go, again?

Why?

Jake turned on the Sharon Street.

10

He was moving down the Sharon Street. The phone rang.

Jake checked the phone.

Michelle

Like in that dream. How is this even possible.

“Hey, Michelle. It’s Jake.”

“Hey, Jake. How are you? Didn’t call you yesterday. Didn’t want to interrupt.”

“Don’t worry, I’m ok. Hey, may I call you back in a while. Need to check one thing.”

“Yes, sure.”

“Thank you.” He hung up the phone.

11

Jake ran to the known crossroads where he met that woman in the blue skirt with the jacket.

The woman was there. Their eyes met.

The colour of the traffic light changed and the crowd started to move. They were moving in the direction of each other.

Jake didn’t lose her from his sight. He started to run in that direction. Looked at both sides, checked if car is there. There were a lot of cars around.

They were almost close. Almost at the same line.

A swish of tires…

CRASH

12

Jake opened his eyes and realised that he’s lying on the ground. Bloody stains were all around him.

He felt that something warm was dripping from his  temple.

The voices around were blurred.

Jake raise his head, everything was like in the mist. He saw a woman. That woman. She was… She was dead. Again.

Conscience left him.

Nothing… Black…

13

Alarm clock was ringing in the apartment.

06:00

Everything was covered with darkness.

“Am I damned? Almost caught her.”

The alarm was turned off on its own. Jake sit on the bed.

He got up and turned on the lights. The light filled in the apartment.

He ran to the kitchen drank a couple sips of water.

“Ok, Jake, how to deal with it?”

“It’s the same all the time. How is this even possible.”

“And yeah, I already know that this goddamn phone is going to ring right now.”

“Ok, Jake, calm down. You got it. You got it.”

Ring-ring-ring

His service phone rang.

Jake picked it up and answered the call.

14

“Hey, Manny.” Jake said.

“Hey, Jake. Was-sup man, we need you today. Hope that you’re in shape.” A male voice said.

Jake was not surprised with that at all.

“I’m ok, Manny. Thanks.”

“That’s good, J. Don’t let them wait, ok?”

“Don’t worry, I won’t disappoint.”

“Yeah, see you in a while.”

“Of course we will. Thank you, Manny. Bye.” He ended up the call and threw the phone on the cushion.

Time for action. I can deal with it. I can do this.

He visited the rest room, shaved and used his favourite cologne.

In a couple of minutes Jake was ready, in the light grey suit he picked a watch.

15

He ran along the Brenton Street. Cars were horning. People going back and forth. A man with a phone walked past Jake. A woman in a brown coat with brown gloves appeared.

The woman stopped in the front of the shop, in front of the mannequin with a cherry red skirt.

She was wondering a moment, then looked down on the shoes that were standing right next to the mannequin.

A couple of road workers were trying to block the road. They were moving a little barricade to put it ahead to provide enough room for their service.

The street was busy.

16

Hey, catch him! Thief! Don’t let him get away!!!”, shouted someone from behind.

People were moving like ants. Only several of them paid attention.

It was that man in a hood. He was running down the street, pushing everyone aside. A woman fell down on the ground when he pushed her.

Jake heard this. And now he was ready.

The man in the hood approached to Jake. In an instant Jake caught him by the hood and hit the thief right into his face.

Some of the people shouted.

“Call the police.”

A man came to Jake and said: “Thanks man, appreciate it.”

“No problem.”

Jake, you’re loosing time.

Jake ran on the Sharon Street.

17

He was running down the Sharon Street. The phone rang.

Jake checked the phone.

Michelle

“Hey, Michelle. It’s Jake. Sorry, got no time to talk. I’m ok. Will call you soon.”

“Hey, Jake. Yes, sure.”

“Thank you.” He hung up the phone.

18

In a while Jake was at the crossroads, the woman was there. Their eyes met.

The colour of the traffic light changed and the crowd started to move. They were moving in the direction of each other.

He shouted, thought that maybe this will distract her for a moment.

“Hey, stop there. Don’t move. You’re going to be hit by a car.”

Jake didn’t lose her from his sight. She didn’t stop.

Whether she didn’t hear him or not. The fact is she didn’t stop moving.

He started to run in that direction. Looked at both sides, checked if car is there. There were a lot of cars around.

They were almost close. Almost at the same line.

He pushed his powers to the limit to be there first. And he did.

A swish of tires…

CRASH

19

Jake opened the eyes. He was lying on the ground. He felt something warm dripping from his temple.

Everything around was in blood stains.

He saw the woman. She was alive.

Conscience left him.

Then nothing. White…

Breaking news

Don’t miss it! Right now there was a car accident. Now you can see it on the screen.

Witness:

“I saw the car that appeared right from nowhere. It was going on full speed.”

“We got a moment to talk with a survivor. Tell us how are you feeling.”

“I’m feeling fine. Check the man who saved me. He’s lying there on the ground”, the woman in the jacket said.

But the fact is that no-one was lying in the direction that she was pointing.
