The Visit
By Allen Henriquez
Awake, drunk
laid out on the kitchen
floor
He spied a note that
read no more no more
It was from his son Michael
His wife Daria had left
years before
The coast guard he joined
the letter said
He the senior Mike wished
he hadn’t hocked his gun
he would’ve put one in his
head
Now gone his only hope
The true Sun of his life
wasn’t there no job no hope despair
But he wasn’t alone
No, no dog no birds no goldfish
no pets just the squeak
of the kitchen’s screen door
unimpeded Mike saw him
smile at him laid out in disarray
No strength to resist and the visitor to pay
