Questions about who we are, and an answer that keeps arising.

Who are we?

A haphazardly blend of stew

Bound in traditions

From gods we never knew.

Centuries old

We are a chaotic tribal blend

And as generations pass

We are like whistles in the wind.

Who do we emulate

But the tillers of discontent,

We are a never ending chain of sheep

That follow the Malcontent.

Those of man who twist the truth,

Leading the rest with sheer deceit,

Then it is then that we do war

Leaving rubble at our feet.

We perpetuate the Phoenix

So we may watch it rise again

From the destruction we created

By the warmongering acts of men.

And all the while quotes are said

To lift the spirit as well as console

But words can never heal the wounds

Of those that paid the toll.

It would be nice if man could change

If he could reflect on his past and learn

If only he wanted the greater good

Not to watch the Phoenix burn.

To free himself from tomorrow's demons

Those he will joyfully meet.

But so it is, we are war

And rubble is at our feet.

I'm afraid that we are who we are

A haphazardly blended brew

Bound in traditions and thoughts of glory

Is the best that we can do.

At our core we're centuries old

But still a tribal blend

And they will hear generations pass

Like whistles in the wind.

A great anti-war poem.

Thanks Bert. --- I know war is sometimes necessary, but then the reasons always point to some selfish act of someone. --- I always liked the old saying, can't remember by who (?), that said something like, "I wonder what would happened if they announced a war and no-one showed up." --- Ah, I can only dream.
