Fetishes

With a title like that, I’m guessing I’ll get a few more reads than usual, which is interesting in itself. But actually it won’t be quite as you might have imagined.

I volunteer at an organisation which involves face to face client contact, and sometimes I get to share my duties with another volunteer, a young woman who busies herself each day by volunteering for a whole raft of other organisations. She’s community minded. The other day, I had just picked up my truck from the mechanic, and as I turned onto the main road, I spotted her walking home as she always does. I remembered we needed to chat briefly, so I pulled over and waited for her to catch up.

While we were chatting on the roadside, some numbnut hung out the passenger window of a passing car and hurled abuse at her. You see, she follows Islam and wears a hijab in public. A while ago, after a client had markedly rolled his eyes at her when she went to the window to greet him, she realised he was uncomfortable talking to her, so she asked me to take over. She told me later that from time to time while walking along the street, she receives similar abuse. But she wasn’t looking for sympathy. It’s appalling really, and for the record, I’d be confident in saying that she’ll be of more value to the community than that yelling numbnut will ever be.

Of course the reason she was identified as Islam is because of her hijab and we’ve yarned about that too; she wears it because it’s what a good Muslim woman should do, nothing more. Fair enough, but still, the thought crosses my mind that life would be so much easier for her, if she didn’t have to wear it. I’ve more respect for her than to suggest the idea, but that’s just my kind of logic…. It’s the same logic that steers me away from religion; while faith may be all very well for the pious, evidence is simply lacking for me. Nevertheless, I stand by the right for anyone to believe whatever they choose, as long as it doesn’t harm anyone. I am interested however, in what makes people tick and why they believe what they do, so I read and ask questions. I did teach in a Christian Sunday School for a couple of years and did work for a Christian organisation in Africa, and you know, we got along just fine.

Now to the fetishes. They are many and varied, but I’m just going to point out a few from the top of my head. Chinese women used to, and maybe some still do, tie their feet to keep them dainty… small feet were an arousal for Chinese men, so women meekly suffered the pain to give their men a thrill. In Tanzania, men like women with big bums… I used to smile when young men would ogle the cheeks rolling along and whisper to each other, ‘Hamsini, mia, hamsini, mia!’ Or, ‘Dodoma, Tobora!’ The latter are two cities and the other means 50, 100, sort of verbalising the rolling motion so pleasing to their eye. It doesn’t occur only in Tanzania, there’s an oft-seen backside that a Clydesdale would be proud of… belonging what’s-her-name in her TV show, she’s made a fortune by showing it off! There was the Roman Emperor, Tiberius, who liked to be licked by little boys, even babies. And there was LBJ who enjoyed flashing  his talisman to all and sundry… and related in a strange way to his office are the golden showers… now I’ve had a few of those… but I don’t recommend them… then again, maybe cow pee doesn’t quite cut it!. The bottom line is, people can be kind of kinky, and always have been.

The incident with my volunteer friend had me thinking. Why did religious writers… not only Islam but Christians too, as in Paul writing to the Corinthians; why did they say that women should cover their hair? I wanted to explore and come up with a reason, and I could well be wrong but… I discounted the idea of keeping the dust off… and to keep dandruff in.  Scholars reckon that women showing off their hair, made them appear to be prostitutes. So there we have it, the prostitutes’ were using the fetish of their hair to attract custom! So it follows that men of that time were into hair! To the ancients, because Adam arrived before Eve, it gave men of religion an excuse to rank personal importance by sex, men being more important than women, so the writers devised a draconian way of keeping women in their place, demanding they cover their hair. Otherwise, women flashing their hair could very well lead men astray! Weren’t the mermaids preening their hair to attract the sailors? Today, considering the time, effort and money that goes into hair, it seems not much has changed, except there’s the freedom to flaunt it.

While covering hair is no longer dogma for Christians, (hmmm what about nuns?), Islam on the other hand, still requires their women to cover their hair, but who knows, maybe there will be change over time, because change always happens. Religion is steeped in tradition and there have always been hardliners amongst the pious who don’t like to loosen their grip. And because in the west, Christianity is easing some of its dogma, there’s criticism of Islam’s resistance to change. And of course none of us condone the violence…When I was researching for this, I found a curious statute on the Massachusetts books that was repealed only as late as 1973. It went something like: if a stubborn youth refuses to listen to and obey his parents, he may be taken before a judge and may be put to death! See, back in the day, the pious lawmakers of Massachusetts took a leaf from the Bible, Deuteronomy, which goes something like: if a youth is stubborn and refuses to obey his parents, he should be taken before the elders and they will stone him to death! See what I mean about believing what you like, as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone?

The numbnut who yelled abuse at my friend, likely knows nothing about any religion, he’s just a bigot, influenced by other bigots and no doubt he sat back in his seat thinking he was today’s hero. Maybe his mates thought so too. The truth is, although there are laws, his ilk won’t be punished, receive any comeuppance, even fry in hell, much less, they won’t be struck down by lightning, they simply further erode what decency there is in the society in which they live.

I suppose a lot of kinks and fetishes do come from cultural traditions or taboos, be it hair or small feet. I can't really relate, although I've never put any thought into why I like certain things. Maybe I should. Might tell me something about myself and the culture I live in

No, I can't say I know all that much about them, there was wide news coverage of the young English girl who died here doing rough sex, the guy was convicted for murder and that tied in with the Kungfu guy - Carridine - who hung himself in a similar way but on his own. And of course our news was full of Trump's (accused) golden shower with a Russian woman. So it crops up without looking for it from time to time. Usianguke
