“Mommy,what's kindness?”

She gazes at the flush in his cheeks

And the sparkle in his eye

His cherry lips curled up

And she hesitantly sighs

For all she can think of,

Is what it DOES NOT mean,

How can she tell her child

So innocent and keen

That some lives are not like,

Of fields and cherry’s

That some children suffer

While HIS life was merry

How can she inform him

Of starvation,hate,racism,

She holds out her hand,

And his chubby one tucks inside,

She walks them to the window,

Shows him trees,harvests,and slides.

But her finger is to the distance,

To jimmy, the unnoticed,homeless man,

And too the small girl before him,

Hard-earned nickel in her hand

They gaze at the pride on her face

The sparkle in her eyes….

And the pure joy on jimmys,

Like a brilliant sunrise.

As her boy looks on,

She squeezes his hand,

He is only small

But he understands…

She holds her little son near,

She softly kisses his cheek,

And  caresses his hair,

“This is kindness…”
