Why I love Booksie. And why I won't be leaving any time soon.

What I Love About Booksie...

Why the ‘...’? Because the full title really is ‘What I love about Booksie and why I’ll never leave.’

And apologies to those that wish I would, but this is my adopted ‘home-from-home’.

Booksie was not the first writing site that I joined. I won’t name the first, but let’s just say that it’s probably the most well-known one, but can be incredibly toxic. I have also tried other sites and am only active on one other site, posting the same as I do on Booksie.

What makes Booksie special? Basically, it is down to the way it is run. There is far more member interaction than anywhere else I’ve tried, and the community spirit can be tremendous. Of course, as with any internet site you always get a few members who prove to be the exception. These individuals can be reported, ignored or called out. The important thing to remember is that they are the exception and 99.9% of the members will be both encouraging and supportive. I have made some very good friends here.

You might well find that people don’t always agree with the views you express, especially on editorial or politically inspired pieces. That’s okay. No one has to agree, just respect other’s rights to express their own thoughts. Some people like to debate these things – again, that’s okay so long as it does not resort to bullying or trolling. This is a writing site, and by posting work we invite comments on content, but we should never be personally attacked. If you come across someone that does make it personal – report them.

I’ve heard people claim that it is difficult to get reads. That is not true, but as with any site you generally get out what you put in. If you post a poem or story you might wait a while to get comments unless you go out there and read and comment on other member’s posts.

This has been a tough year for me in all kinds of ways. I have had plenty of days when I have thought of packing up writing completely, but I'm still here, writing and reading. Giving up on writing would be the only thing that would make me quit  Booksie. Here’s to many more years!

Completely agree hullabaloo22. I came to Booksie to improve my writing skills and to have others read my work, I stayed for the very reasons you've expressed in your piece. On a personal note, I hope the new year holds better things for you.

Good article about a decent writing site. I tried Reddit and looked into What App. But I like this site.
I don't have any problems with any of the negative comments. I actually get a laugh out of them.
Just write because we all have stories in us that we would like to share with others.

The friendliness and support from Booksie members (you included) have kept me writing and I too intend on hanging around for quite a while yet!
I feel I have come on in leaps and bounds since joining Booksie and my writing and grammar have improved immeasurably, thanks to the help of your good selves.

Thanks so much for giving this a read, C-S. The strength of Booksie lies in the willingness of its members to be supportive of each other, I think, rather than to tear each other down. Of course, there are the odd exceptions, but for the most part the Booksonians cannot be beaten!

I've been on Booksie for 5 years, and I wouldn't trade what I found here for anything. Aside from tremendously improving my writing, I met some of my closest friends here. On that note, I hope 2021 is kinder to us both.

I second that, Christy, I really do!

I agree with you 100%, Hully, Booksie has a unique, free-thinking, open and, above all, communal spirit that keeps bringing me back. I do post on another site with a vast audience - because it controls me, makes me feel like a tiny fish in a a huge ocean, which we all are. I also post on my website - audio-visual stories - because the Booksie capacity for audio stories is too short for most of my tales. I wrote to Booksie Guy recently suggesting ways (like longer audio timings) that Booksie can be made even better. But Booksie is my soul-mate, like yours Hull, and I'll stay here, forever, and ever with the lovely friends I've made here. Happy Christmas, Hully, HJ.

Happy Christmas to you too, HJ. I don't think there is any other writing site that is so easy to make friends on.

Definitely agree with you. I've been way too busy to write anything lately, but that's on me. I'll try to get back to it during my break that starts next week.

Thanks for giving this a read, Helmu. I really don't think the community found on Booksie is matched on any other writing site.

I agree. I'm on another site, too, but it is difficult on that other site to get technical support when you need it. I like this community much better, and have found some great writers here. You are one of them. :)

I can't comment about other sites as I've never joined any so I guess really my 2 cents don't really count but I do like Booksie and am not looking for another.

I went through the older essays and found this one. I completely agree with you on the atmosphere on Booksie. I think it is very fortunate that the acid one can find on some other platforms is usually absent from it. Constructive and respectful criticism gets easily turned into venom by people with the wrong attitude. I hope that Booksie continues to enriches people's ideas about writing.

Yep, so do I, Bert. Every site has its own toxic individuals, but I think Booksie has less than most.
Thanks for giving this a read.
