BARRISTER OLAOYE, THE CHURCH CLEANER

Over time at SS Peter & Paul Catholic Pro-Cathedral, Lagere, Ile-Ife, Osun State, Nigeria; I have noticed a man. Whenever I saw him, he is either picking nylons or papers or litters generally on the Church’s premises. He goes beyond to sweeping and mopping the Church especially the Sanctuary, the Chapel of perpetual Adoration and the Grotto. Apart from that, I have also noticed him opening the doors and windows of the Church and closing them after programmes or Masses even when late at night. These actions made my mind restless, then I began to develop various questions: Is he actually a Barrister? Has he committed a big sin then seeking mercy? Is he expecting a particular favour from God? Does he have wife and Children, and if so, are they aware of his action of cleaning the Church? These amongst other questions were driving my curiosity. It was not as though am not aware that one needed to work for God or that I have never seen people work for God in the Church but there are works that human may consider ‘dirty’ which when someone voluntarily pick up such work and decided to do them in the Church, it raises eyebrow since it is extraordinary, because naturally if one is not mocked physically, I assured there would be mockery in the minds of many passerby. So I took the lion by its teeth and walked up to him. After my interaction with him, I discovered that: He is Augustine Ayodele Dokun Olaoye. He is really a barrister that went to law school. He has not committed a sin different from what any human commits daily. He has not tied his cleaning action to any expectation. He has wife and able Children who are aware of his actions. I will not forget to add that Barrister Olaoye was not a Catholic by birth and in fact, not a Christian. His grandfather was a masquerade while his father was a Muslim. He became a Catholic in 1963 when his Parent was financially weakened to further his secondary school after completing his Primary education in 1960. It was Reverend Father Anthony Donnell, who offered his father a Church cleaning Job so that he can earn to send his son further to the secondary school. Rev Fr Anthony Donnell was in charge of Parishes in Iwo and its environs. Since then, he started attending St Anthony Catholic Church, Telemu, which is about four miles to Iwo, Oyo State. Barrister Olaoye had it in mind to challenge his father in protecting his Catholicism decision if he tries to question him about becoming a Catholic since his father also became a Muslim while his grandfather was a masquerade. Fortunately, his father did not challenge him and his other siblings. His cleaning action became coincidental since his Father also cleaned the Church; the difference is that, he was doing his cleaning voluntarily while his father took it as paid job. Barrister Olaoye is a little above Seventy years of age in 2020. Elizabeth Bolanle Olaoye is the name of his wife. He is blessed with two children; John Oluwasegun Olaoye and Veronica Biosioluwa Olaoye. Barrister Olaoye started cleaning the Church during the creation of “Gethsemane Night of Adoration” at the Parish by Rev. Fr. Festus Komolafe who was the Parish Priest of SS Peter & Paul at that time. The Priest had requested everyone to choose a work to do for God and the workers were later named ‘Gethsemane Family’. Barrister Olaoye chose his duty as a Church cleaner just to show appreciation for God’s love and protection in his life. What has God done actually? Barrister Olaoye describes his being alive a mystery. He recalled that Satan and his angels had made several efforts to terminate his life. On three occasions, he found himself thrown into the lion’s den which the lion was as big as a cow. The lion could not harm him but turns away immediately he saw his face. Barrister has been way-laid on several occasions, he has been shot too. There was a time he was sleeping on a Sunday during Christmas period when an unknown person with a tail appeared and wanted to kill him but disappeared after barrister shouted ‘Holy Spirit’ three times; he believed it was Satan – all in the dream. In real life, there was a time his wife travelled with his daughter when they had an accident; the vehicle they had entered tumbled three times and three people died in the accident but nothing happened to his wife and child. Earlier before their journey, it was revealed in dream which he prayed about; a moments before the accident occurred, he saw a tall woman appeared to him, pulled up his daughter by her hand and disappeared. It was thereafter that he received the call of car accident of his family; he believed it was the Blessed Virgin Mary that appeared and interceded. All these put together was the reason barrister Olaoye was cleaning the Church – he has been doing it not for any special request. He is the type that prefers to lead by showing example even during his university days and as a civil servant. Apart from the fact that he chose to clean the Church, barrister naturally detest dirty environment, he is never feeling comfortable seeing things that litters the ground until he picks it up. He believed that the entire surroundings of the Church should be kept clean always because the Spirit of God duels not only inside the main Church building. Bolanle’s husband finds it difficult to understand why people hardly litter houses of highly placed people of the society whereas finds it very easy to dirty the house of God. Of course barrister’s immediate family had once thought that he could replace his cleaning role with monetary contribution which he did not consent to. Apart from that, a Parishioner had advised him to quit the cleaning. Despite challenges that arose, Oluwasegun’s father never relented, he was very comfortable doing it; he preferred cleaning the Church and never planned on stopping soon. It has never crossed the mind of Biosioluwa’s father to at some point quit his cleaning role though there were turbulences in the middle of the ocean; he held tenaciously unto his paddle. Many people in the Church go to the length of dumping defecation on the Church’s surrounding and in the minor refuse bin but barrister had no choice than to evacuate them bearing the odour. Barrister Olaoye has the habit of running down to the Church anytime he noticed that time is not on his side since he is never comfortable going late to Church. I have noticed and cherished his style of prostrating flat on the floor while praying no matter how expensive and official his clothes were at that time. Barrister Augustine Ayodele Dokun Olaoye wished that every individual can work for God irrespective of personality or profession because there is no work meant for the lower class in the house of God. He sees himself as ‘just’ a tool in the hand of God.
