A substitute child! this short story is about how my father kept his promise to accept me as a child as per my mother's claim that he is my father.

This is a story my father told me when I was about 30 years old. He was a good and passionate story teller whenever he felt like it!

He had a girlfriend he loved very much when he was in his early 30s; that man was kind of Casanova, if you know what I mean. He was really in love with this one, and wanted to get married to her, but needed some time. Unfortunately we can’t figure out what tomorrow will bring us.

He was suddenly ill and had to be hospitalized. After some time, he was declared dead. At some point, before he was sent to the morgue, one of the doctors who was very curious and doubtful about it, wanted to try one last thing: to cut in the front of the neck through the trachea. He had two things in mind: may help to save the patient or at least could learn something more about what exactly killed that man and save other lives.

Thanks to the internet, now I can give a name to what they did to him- It is called tracheostomy . Following the tracheostomy, coagulated blood rushed out through the hole they made in the neck. Soon they noticed the heart had resumed beating. Then they immediately took action to do all they had to do to save him before it was too late. They placed a tube in the opening, so that he could breath through the tube, for it was not possible to do that through the nose or mouth. They brought him back to life; he got a second chance!

The luckiest man had to go through a slow healing process, though he was well taken care of by the curious medical team, including a catholic nun praying by his bed side, every morning.

On the other hand, before he got ill, he had noticed something which made him believe that his girl friend was pregnant. I don’t know if he was shy to ask about it, but he was patient and expecting her to let him know. So, while he was taking his time to heal, his girlfriend must have been in trouble as to what to do with an unexpected pregnancy and a boyfriend fighting for his life in the hospital, for such a long time; time long enough to expose her secret. It doesn’t take a genius to tell It was something she couldn’t let happen. In those times a fatherless child was a disaster; something unthinkable for a girl to deal with on her own! Apparently, she must have accepted a marriage proposal via parents from a well to do man. Soon they got married and had this beautiful son who had resided in the heart and mind of my father forever!

Life goes on! By the time my father got well enough to leave the hospital, he was quite bankrupted, and almost penniless. He didn’t tell me how and when he got the bad news about his girlfriend! I should have asked; Poor him!

He would try to make ends meet for a while, but he couldn’t. Probably he might as well had been pretty much disappointed by life’s sudden turn towards an unknown destination; he decided to leave!

He didn’t have a clue as to who told the girl he was leaving looking for a job; could be definitively, but she appeared. Quite unexpectedly, that early morning he had to take the bus and leave, the girl came carrying her baby, as if she wanted to just show him who the baby looked like. That was the most shocking experience of his entire life. He was frozen to see a tiny creature that looked exactly like him. Still, neither he asked nor did she try to utter a word on who the father was. He didn’t have the courage to ask if it was his son, for he was penniless and was leaving, with nothing concrete about his future. He thought she loved him so much that knowing all he had been through, she didn’t want to bother him. For a while, they would stare at each other, and he would stare at the little boy’s face; thinking how life could get this unexpected. He felt the saddest person on earth; almost felt like crying! Nothing was questioned or declared during the brief meeting; it was only the poor hearts who seemed to be communicating sadly and had unanimously reached an agreement to skip this fatherhood for it had proven itself to be impossible! They bade farewell; he left heavy-hearted and carrying a life-long pain for losing both, specially his baby boy!

That morning while sitting in the bus, he promised to himself: I will do anything in my power to assume the responsibility that comes along fathering, a child whose mother claims I am the father, no matter how difficult the situations could be! I PROMISE!

Soon, a young lady stood before him claiming that she was pregnant with his baby and was scared to deliver and raise the child alone. He was immediately reminded of the promise; he couldn’t entertain anything else; he switched off the noises within and ACCEPTED it right away! That was it! He said I DO to the child and mother in the same phrase and at the same time!

That baby was me. Thank you father, for you haven't dinied me of my right to have a father; a wonderful father of course!
