Night Watchman

He swoops down to land on a fence post,

balance instant as he folds in his wings.

Eyes adapted to the darkness,

he looks,

he waits.

He has plenty of patience.

Then suddenly, prompted by something he’s seen,

the owl takes to the sky and he flies.
