THE PHOTOGRAPH

“Do you know, Aunt Prema is coming today?” asked Susmita ,to her two cute  little children, Arun and Priya.

“Yes,Yes.Isn’t she the world famous photographer ? We have seen the photograph  in the newspaper for which she was awarded the Golden Photograph Award,” said  Priya, the younger of the two.

At that moment the bell rang and Susmita requested her husband, Raghu to open  the door.

It was Aunt Prema!

The two children ran to her and hugged her. Prema kissed the  two children on their cheeks and said, “You two are so cute!”

“Prema aunty have you brought some photos for us? We know that you are very  popular,” asked Arun.

“Obviously! Here they are,” said Prema and handed over some photos to the two  children.

Suddenly, Priya found that very photograph she had seen in the newspaper and  asked Prema, “Prema aunty, can you explain what has happened here ?”

“ Well, this photograph is of a dead woman, lying under a banyan tree. She is the  mother of the two children seen in the photograph. But unfortunately, the two  children don’t know that their mother has gone to eternal sleep. They keep on  trying to wake their mother. When they are unable to do so, they start crying. I saw  them while passing by. I could not lose a moment and clicked my camera for a  perfect photograph. This very photograph fetched me the Golden Photograph  Award this year.”

“But that’s very cruel….”, Arun was about to finish the sentence when their father  called them and told them to do their Mathematics homework .

Now, Prema felt quite uneasy about the two children. So she asked Susmita, “Susmita, whose children are they?”

“Why, they are my children,” replied Susmita.

“No, you are lying. Don’t lie to me. My friend, please tell me,” Prema asked  again.

Now, Susmita took a deep breath and took the photograph from Prema and pointed  out to the two children in the the photo and said,” These two children are the same  children whom you just saw. You did not save them. But I did. I adopted them and  now I am their mother.” Prema was ashamed and could not utter a word.
