Another afternoon’s excursion

Who Will Claim Me

I’ve heard the superstitions and fables

Or maybe it’s the truth

I really don’t know

Of how family and loved ones gather

To guide our awareness into the glow

For my mother

It was a party outside the window

For my grandma

It was a childhood friend

So how’s it gonna be when my time comes

Who will be there

To claim me in the end

I’ve no children to mourn my passing

To passionately decry my truth

My siblings will likely outlive me

As addled age outlives precious youth

Given the option

That’s probably how I’d call it

Although choice usually isn’t part of the plan

So I’ll wait to see

Who it is that comes to comfort me

While I wait to pay the debt

That comes to every man
