A skeptic asks God some tough questions.

“Q&A With God”

Q: So you talk a lot about loving your neighbor, and one of your biggest commandments is “Thou shall not kill.” But you’ve killed a lot of people, especially in the Old Testament. What’s the deal with that?

A: Well, I am God.

Q: Don’t dodge my question!

A: I’m just kidding. I’ve never killed anyone, only brought to new life. The punishment part of it is only temporary.

Q: But what about Hell? Isn’t that the “new life” you brought some people to just because they didn’t believe in you? Seems like death to me.

A: People choose Hell, I don’t choose it for them. And it’s never because they don’t believe in me. It’s because they refuse to accept my love for them and simply don’t want to be with me. And as much as that pains me, I respect their free will.

Q: Okay, I’m not entirely convinced, but I’ll change the subject. It seems to me you’ve got a bit of a superiority complex just because you happened to exist before everything else in the universe. Didn’t you merely get lucky?

A: I AM.

Q: That’s not an answer!

A: It’s not an intelligible answer, but one day you will understand. I precede luck, so I can’t have merely gotten lucky. I am all that there was, and all that there’d ever be if I hadn’t existed.

Q: Whoa, slow down, philosophy wizard! I’ll drop the subject since it’s obviously way beyond my comprehension. Though it shouldn’t be. Anyways, you seem rather self-righteous.

A: Oh, back at that again, are you?

Q: Well, it’s not an entirely ungrounded question. Aren’t all monotheistic religions based around the concept of loving you and serving you and doing whatever the hell you command? Sounds more like an abusive relationship if you ask me.

A: I don’t need humans to love or serve me, or do whatever I command. Believe it or not, they do it for their own sake, to satisfy their natural longing to trust in someone who knows the answers to life’s mysteries. I didn’t create humans because I needed to receive love. I created humans because I wanted to give love.

Q: That’s not the way most priests and pastors have made it sound my whole life.

A: Well, they’re only human.

Q: Alright, I’ll wrap up this interview with the crème-de-la-crème of God questions: Why do bad things happen to good people? I often hear people say that you’ve got a plan for everyone, but I personally think that’s bullshit, unless your “plan” sometimes includes getting leukemia at two years old or getting sent to a death camp for being Jewish or crippled or gay.

A: I designed the universe and humanity to be free. That is my first plan, the plan that supersedes all others. Yes, I have an ideal plan for each person’s time on Earth, but it does not always work out, and horrible things happen. However, evil never has the final say. In addition to my temporary Earthly plan, I also have an eternal Heavenly plan for each person, and it never goes awry as long as they ultimately choose to embrace my love and mercy, whether it be directly or indirectly.

Q: You’ve given me a lot to ponder as you always do. Anything else you want me to know before we call it a day?

A: Know that I’ve always been with you and always will be. You’ll never stop being precious to me.
