When someone should have kept their secret...

Feel Better

Do you feel better
now that you've made
your deathbed confession?

Does your soul feel lighter
now that you've unburdened
your guilty conscience?

Can you die happy
now that the weight
has been lifted off your chest?

Can you breathe easier
now that you've told me
the secret you've been keeping?

Why in God's name
would you do that to me?
What purpose did it serve in the end?

Did you hope it would earn you
brownie points with Jesus
if you came clean?

Did you think you were protecting me
from the gut-wrenching truth?
It didn't work.

You could have had the decency
to take that secret to the grave
and frankly, I wish you had

I cannot find the words
to convey my anguish
and disappointment in you

I may never know the whole truth
but I sure hope you feel better.
Your happiness is what matters, isn't it?

You'll surely make it
into Heaven now, my love.
I'll just carry on in my living Hell.

Oh, wow, Tammi. So much feeling in this poem. And it's true, some secrets should be kept just that, especially when the lie has lasted a long time.
