squirrel’s winter
squirrel’s nest high in a tree
in the snowy woods
must be a warm place
round and made of leaves
moss and twigs woven together
it has no lights
no heat from a furnace
no running water
no flush
little bodies curled together
asleep dreaming of spring
fresh food
and jumping through the trees
chasing each other
ice on the tree limbs
wind blows the tree back and forth
rocks the squirrels in their cradle
fast asleep
soon sun will warm
the air
rain will fall
and little baby squirrels will
take a peak out of their nest
to see what this new world is all about
next year they will be in the nest
as the winds blow the trees
and they will cuddle with their mates
and make new babies
to peak out of the nest at their new world
