This is a screenplay. Mia has left her boyfriend Beto because she needs time to think about their relationship. In the past few months, she has developed a virtual relationship with her online English teacher, Ana. Who is right for Mia? (Film link:https://youtu.be/upKxCy7YKxU)

One year after the end of “Sexual Relations”

INT. TWO DIFFERENT HOUSES - DAY

MIA, 40, sits at a table in front of her laptop in Oaxaca. A notebook, pen and a bottle of water sit on either side of it. She is dressed casually.

ANA, 25, sits on a sofa in her Brooklyn apartment with her laptop on her lap. She is also dressed casually.

They talk to each other on Skype. We possibly see them on a split-screen or from each other's POV.

MIA

Wor-ed.

ANA

It's like two words. Wor-uld.

MIA

Wor -el.

ANA

I need to hear the D.

MIA

Fuck!

ANA

You never have a problem with that sound.

MIA

I know. Too many practice.

ANA

Too much.

MIA

Too much. Thank you.

ANA

Okay, one last sound. I, R. -Er.

MIA

Okee-dokee.

ANA

What's the number after twenty-nine?

MIA

Twenty-eight.

Ana laughs loudly. Mia recognizes her mistake and joins in.

ANA

Oh, man. Let's try another. What's the number after twelve?

MIA

Twenty-one.

ANA

Whaaat?!!!!

MIA

Oh, shit.

They both start laughing again.

MIA (CONT)

Hashtag English sucks.

ANA

I think we should stop here, don't you?

MIA

Do you have time to talk longer?

ANA

Not today. I have another class. But, after your next class, ok?

MIA

We can have a marathon call?

ANA

Why not? Practice your math.

MIA

Please hashtag yourself.

ANA

Hashtag fuck you Ana.

Mia makes a heart with her hands.

EXT. IN FRONT OF A CHURCH - THE NEXT DAY

Mia sits on a bench. Her backpack is next to her. She writes in a notebook. Mexican music PLAYS in the neighborhood.

After a few seconds her phone PINGS. She has a message on her phone from BETO.

BETO(text)

¡Hola! ¿Cómo estás mi amor? Heart emoji

Mia ignores it. Another PING.

BETO

¿Cuando vendrás a casa? Teary eyed emoji.

Mia taps her phone to call Beto.

MIA

Hola, Beto...No lo sé. Me gusta Oaxaca. Necesito tiempo para pensar.

INT. HOUSE - SAME DAY

Ana sits on a couch with her laptop. Her phone RINGS.

She stands up.

ANA

Hey, what's new?

(pause)

Really? When?

(pause)

That soon?

(pause)

No, I'm ready. Are you kidding? Ciao.

Ana disconnects the call and does a happy dance.

(while dancing)

Two months and I'm Ghana be a volunteer. For a year. Did you hear?

INT. TWO DIFFERENT HOUSES - DAY

Same situation as Scene 1 but a couple of days later.

Ana looks at her phone. It reads: 2:00 or 14:00.

ANA

Good class. Not your best, but...

MIA

It's...Cómo se dice "my time this month."

ANA

Ah, menstrual cramps.

MIA

Menst--

ANA

Just call it your period.

MIA

My period? You mean like grammar?

ANA

Google it. I'll send you the spelling.

MIA

Ok.

ANA

I wonder how many students tell their teacher the things you tell me.

MIA

That's why I love your classes. No filters.

ANA

Are you okay to talk?

MIA

Definitely.

ANA

Let's speak Spanish today.

MIA

If we do I'll never improve my English.

ANA

Good point.

MIA

Ah, I finished the article for the travel site.

ANA

Churches of Oaxaca?

MIA

Yes. Good photos. Sun today. What about you?

ANA

I taught four classes and baked three pies for my mom.

On the screen: 4pm or 16:00

MIA

Did you see the photo I sent you?

ANA

¿La avena? Estoy segura de que la tuya es deliciosa. Pero...

MIA

But, what?

ANA

Mine's better.

MIA

I don't think so.

ANA

I use the secret ingredient.

MIA

Mine has nueces, frutas secas, chia seeds. Very healthy.

ANA

Mine has mango. I win.

MIA

We'll have, um...a contest one day.

ANA

I'd love that!

On the screen: 6pm or 18:00.

MIA

Incredible! Four hours again.

ANA

I'm hungry.

MIA

One thing. The contest?

ANA

Yes.

MIA

In the same kitchen.

ANA

Of course. See you soon.

Mia makes a heart with her hands. Chat disconnected.

ANA

In the same kitchen? Why not?

Ana opens her browser and clicks on the KAYAK icon on the screen.

EXT. OAXACA - DAY

Two days later Ana walks down the street. She has a backpack, a small rolling suitcase and wears a locally made hat. She stops when she sees a church up ahead.

Sitting on a ledge in front of the church is Mia. She is writing in a notebook.

Ana walks to a spot where Mia can't see her.

Mia stops writing and looks around as if she senses Ana's presence. Then she begins writing again.

Ana quietly approaches Mia. She stops a few meters from her.

ANA

¿Cómo estás, Mia?

MIA

¿Ana? ¿Estoy soñando?

ANA

No es un sueño.

Mia gives Ana a big hug. She tries to kiss her but Ana turns her head.

ANA (CONT)

We're in front of a church.

Mia turns Ana's head with her finger. Several feet away a young couple is kissing.

ANA (CONT)

Fine.

Ana moves closer to Mia, takes her hand and puts it on her own crotch. Mia pulls away quickly. Ana laughs.

MIA

Are you crazy? Let's go to my house.

INT. MIA'S HOUSE - DAY

ANA

Nice.

MIA

You can put your backpack in there.

Ana walks into the bedroom and sits on the bed.

MIA (CONT)

It's comfortable. Do you want a rest?

Ana gestures for Mia to come closer, then pulls her onto the bed.

ANA

You haven't had sex for a year. I'll sleep later.

Later in the kitchen.

ANA (CONT)

What a marathon.

MIA

Only two hours. Not a marathon.

(puts arms around Ana's neck)

Two more hours?

ANA

Let's eat first. I need energy.

Mia looks in the fridge.

MIA

No food.

Ana holds up a finger then exits the kitchen. She returns with her backpack, unzipped and hands it to Mia.

Mia looks inside and takes out a bag of oatmeal.

MIA (CONT)

¿Avena? The competition begins.

EXT. ROOF OF HOUSE - DAY

After eating oatmeal, they drink coffee.

ANA

This coffee is great.

MIA

Oaxaca coffee.

ANA

The weather is always like this?

MIA

Most days.

ANA

I could get used to this. Maybe I'll stay in Oaxaca for a while.

MIA

Really?

ANA

I teach online. I can live anywhere. Plus, we'd be together.

MIA

It's a nice idea.

(pause)

So?

ANA

So what?

MIA

So, who wins the contest?

ANA

Ha! You. No question.

MIA

Really?

 ANA

Absolutely.

MIA

Why?

ANA

Because I want more sex.

MIA

Hashtag all you want.

ANA

Do you ever wonder why the universe did this? I mean, start this--whatever it is we have.

MIA

Only every day.

Ana smiles and nods.

MIA (CONT)

I felt comfortable quickly because your first correction used the word fuck.

ANA

Oh, yeah. Your "focus" sounded like "fuckus."

MIA

I felt like I could be me.

ANA

I know, right? Still, your story about looking for love shocked me.

MIA

But, it's true. I thought my heart was in my vagina.

ANA

It's there again. I swear I saw it.

Both laugh.

ANA (CONT)

From Skype to here.

MIA

Muchas, muchas horas de Skype.

ANA

And now what?

MIA

I don't know. I'm having a transition. Who am I? What do I want?

ANA

Could you do it in Brooklyn?

(silence)

Don't tell me. Complicated.

MIA

A little.

ANA

Not me. No complications.

MIA

You're lucky.

ANA

You can do it. Everything and everybody that is causing you stress--¡Adiós!

MIA

I want that, but...

ANA

I sleep better, food tastes better.

MIA

I'm trying.

ANA

I know. Where are we eating tonight?

INT. RESTUARANT - NIGHT

Ana and Mia sit at a table on the terrace, two glasses of mezcal and water in front of them and chips and salsa. They are both dressed more formally than earlier. Mia pours the mezcal.

MIA

Did you drink mezcal before?

ANA

Never.

MIA

This is espadin. My favorite.

They pick up their glasses.

ANA

To being in Oaxaca with you.

MIA

Me, too.

Mia takes a sip. Ana drinks half of hers and starts coughing. She drinks some water.

MIA (CONT)

Only a little. Is strong.

ANA

Yeah, now I know.

(pause)

Can I ask a question?

MIA

Of course.

ANA

It's a little personal. What's complicated in your life?

Mia finishes her mezcal.

ANA (CONT)

Your relationship.

Mia nods.

ANA (CONT)

But, it's over.

MIA

Not over. Maybe over. Want it over.

ANA

You never told me that.

MIA

I thought I had more time to think.

Ana nods slightly then sips her mezcal.

ANA

Why not just break up?

MIA

My parents love him. And I don't want to hurt him.

ANA

Whose life are you living?

MIA

I know.

ANA

All these months I was just a distraction.

MIA

No. The classes. They were never about the English.

Ana finishes her mezcal.

ANA

Then come to Brooklyn. I mean, from the beginning you've talked about living in New York City.

MIA

It's so expensive. I'd need a job.

ANA

I have a huge trust fund.

MIA

I have a conservative family. They wouldn't understand.

ANA

I'm really trying here.

MIA

Think about me one time.

ANA

I think all I'm hearing is crazy talk.

MIA

Crazy? Why are you here?

ANA

I don't know.

MIA

Me, too.

ANA

Me neither.

MIA

I don't want a fucking English lesson.

ANA

You don't know what you want. Grow up.

Mia her mezcal on Ana, stands up and leaves. Ana stands at her seat.

ANA

Mia, wait. Mia. Let's...

Ana sits.

ANA

Shit!

Ana finishes her mezcal.

EXT. A STREET - NIGHT

Ana walks along a street carrying a bag of food. She stops to make a phone call.

ANA

Hey, how ya doing?...I'm in Mexico. Long story. Listen, any news on Ghana?...Maybe three months, now?...Yeah, still interested.

Ana disconnects the call.

EXT./INT. MIA'S HOUSE - MOMENTS LATER

Ana KNOCKS on the door. She waits a few seconds, KNOCKS again.

ANA

Mia, it's me.

No reply. Ana calls Mia.

ANA (CONT)

Hey, I need my stuff. Then I'm gone.

Call disconnected. The door opens just enough so the suitcase rolls out. Then we see the backpack.

ANA (CONT)

I want to explain. Just two minutes.

The backpack drops to the ground. Ana puts her arm through the opening before the door closes.

ANA (CONT)

Ahhhh, shit!!!

Mia pushes Ana's arm out of the door. Mia closes the door.

ANA

I have food. Your favorite. Can you smell it?

MIA

Leave it outside.

Ana gets her backpack and suitcase.

ANA

No talk. No food. Mmmmm, smells delicious.

The door opens.

MIA

You know my weakness.

ANA

A few of them.

Ana enters. She sets her bag and the food on the table.

Ana takes Mia's hands in hers.

ANA

I apologize. Another alien abduction, you know, where I go crazy for a minute.

MIA

This is the third one.

ANA

Third. Sorry, it's my habit.

(pause)

I promise to be more patient. Take all the time you need.

Mia gives Ana a soft kiss.

ANA

But, don't take too long. You're not a young woman.

Mia gives Ana the finger.

ANA

Whenever you're ready. I'm hungry.

MIA

You're always hungry.

ANA

Only since I arrived in Oaxaca.

MIA

First the, como se dice, the appetizer.

Ana

Great. I love tacos.

MIA

Tacos?

ANA

You'll see.

They walk to the bedroom. Door closes.

INT. BEDROOM - THE NEXT MORNING

Mia lies in bed. She is on her side looking at her phone. She has a message from Beto.

BETO (text)

Estoy en Oaxaca. Quiero verte.

Mia types a reply and sends.

MIA (text)

Ahora no. Te llamaré más tarde.

MIA

Ana?

Ana enters the room.

ANA

No phone.

Mia puts it under her pillow.

MIA

More tacos?

ANA

Te gustan los tacos? (You like tacos?)

MIA

Me gustan mucho. (A lot.)

ANA

Estás lista? (Are you ready?)

MIA

Siempre contigo. (With you? Always.)

Ana crawls under the covers from the foot of the bed. Loud POUNDING on the front door. More POUNDING.

ANA

What the fuck? Are we expecting anyone?

Mia shakes her head no. More POUNDING.

BETO

(off-screen)

¡Abre la pinche puerta! (Open the fucking door!)

ANA

You're a popular chica.

MIA

¡Hashtag pinche universo! (Hashtag fuck the universe!)

THE END
