It’s a calm night,

a clear night,

the lake is bathed

in pure moonlight...

I’ll stand on its edge

and I’ll stare at the perfect moon

captured on the water’s surface.

Barely a ripple distorts that immaculate reflection.

I’ve always wanted to go to the moon;

the light side,

the dark side.

I’d climb up the mountains

and climb down the craters

and I’d look at the Earth in the distance

wondering if I’d found my way home.

Of course, I’ve never made it there

but perhaps

if I dared to take a dive

into that reflection,

I’d fly

through space

and bathe in moonlight.

Except it would never work.

I’d break it up into fragments

as I plunged through the water,

distorting the perfection,

shattering the reflection

and that moon would be as unreachable

as the one that looks on down

from the sky.

It’s a calm night,

it’s a clear night,

and I’ll turn my back

on the pure moonlight.
