Invasion Day 2021

Yes, it’s Invasion Day, again. It is 233 years since the First Fleet set up the colony of New South Wales and dispossessed the indigenous people of their lands. Of course, it is known as Australia Day to the redneck Bogans of Coolamon, and it is a public holiday.

January 26th has become a very contentious date in Australia. The celebration of wholesale slaughter and the occupation of someone else’s land. Something to be proud of, or ashamed of. The current Prime Minister sides with the mainstream, of course, but he always sides with the populists, whether it about global warming or refugees. As long as it's reactionary and small- minded.

Some people would like to choose another national day, but nobody is sure what that date should be. My friend Tess Tickle thinks it should be the eighth of May – M8 (mate!) which would be rather amusing and very Australian.

Former Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull, who won an Australia Day gong this year for his contribution to merchant banking, or whatever, thinks we should choose another date when we become a Republic. I’m not holding my breath for that to eventuate, as the Queen of England will remain our Head of State until her son becomes Charles III, when he will take over the role. Honestly! Is there not an Australian citizen out there who could become our Head of State? Are we really that bloody useless?

I suppose there are other issues to be addressed that are more important at the moment, like global warming, the current pandemic and world-wide recession to consider, but it does make the nation look a bit ridiculous. A foreign-born Head of State, a government that is controlled by the vested interests of the coal and gas industries. Can you believe that our current Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, once took a lump of coal into parliament house to spruik the use of greenhouse emitting fuel? What a joke!

Oh well. What does one do? Accept the archaic political structure, build more coal-fired power stations and keep celebrating genocide every Australia Day? It certainly looks that way. What a joke! I advocate that we celebrate Mate Day on May 8 and appoint a comedian as Head of State and enjoy the joke our society has become. I’m nominating Kylie Mole as our future president. She would be perfect! She was born in Australia, lives in Melbourne and uses the word Bogan to describe nearly everyone. While we are at it, how about we change the name of the country as well? Australia is to close to Austria, and we are always being confused by foreigners. I think Commedia would be a much better name. After all, we have become something of a joke.

Well, I must say, America hasn't understood the relationships of The Empire either, with Queen Elizabeth still gracing Canadian coinage next door. We walked into that country twice, expecting a cheery welcome, and got the snot beat out of us both times. Go figure... And you (Australia) don't get to be the world's joke until we're (USA) finished being the world's joke. Wait your turn. P.S. Craig, I liked your article. Thanks for the thought provoke. Advance Australia Fair! (Wuz thinking about native people's sometimes-justice just a few days ago - because of the anniversary of the Battle of Isandlwana, January 22, 1879. 20,000 Zulus who just said no. The bullies didn't always get away with it. Columbus Day 500 in 1992 was mostly canceled everywhere here, so the times they be a changin'. S L O W L Y.)

. . . I was gonna nominate Mark Brandon 'Chopper' Read if he was still alive. Les Patterson will do - with a bevvy in his hand.

Sounds like you had the same upstanding history as we did with the native Americans who lived here first; a fine write, Craig

Thanks Mike. I'd say it was worse here. No treaties were ever signed. Aboriginal Australians weren't citizens until1967 and didn't have the vote. The Tasmanian Aboriginals were almost completely wiped out. Australia Day or invasion day? It is a highly contentious celebration.
All the best,
