This is my poem about escapism. It depicts how people have their own different versions of it.

It is an art.

It is a mystery.

It is another form of life.

I believe it could've been more

Only if it wasn't used to escape from the hellish hell

that is euphemistically known as life these days.

Some use tangible forms

readily available

Just need to toss a few bucks

in exchange for an hour of exuberant hallucinations.

He takes it in, hoping it will conquer his dilemmas

and perhaps it will. Perhaps not.

In his own mind, it nevertheless will.

Obscure smoke emerges from his room

lurks just outside the doorway

waiting to greet him once more

Plastic wrappers scattered around

like confetti

only that it isn't the time for a celebration.

Some use much less lethal ways

to escape.

She puts on her castoff earbuds

scrolls through her lengthy playlist

stops at a melody she heard

for the first time

under circumstances

much preferable.

She was ten

life wasn't a lion's den

She danced to the music

and now she merely listened to it

amidst midnight tears.

Her heart swayed to the beat

betraying her desire

of it not beating at all

She hung by a thread

and so did her sanity.

And some just sit there.

Staring into the void,

hoping it will fill

the void inside

Blood runs

not cold but downcast

Eyes subside

Hearts beat

slow but not slow enough

Screams reverberate

Restless nights

spent staring at the equally restless monsters

The smoking gun

but the gunpowder was not perceptible

Winless fights

against one's own imposter

Escapism is my drug.
