Pessimistic Progressive
I’ve been thinking of the perfect phase
I’d use to describe my political point of view
I am very liberal and sympathize with that most,
But I expect thinking to be the old and not the new
I was rooting for Trump to win the nomination
In ‘16, because I thought his platform was laughable
But, the joke was on me, for four long years
It was like watching a guy with something flammable
Torching norms, common sense, and our intelligence
Stoking intolerance, drive a deep rift between us all
But he was just a physical manifestation of a sick
Society, with his anti-everything and his useless wall
Villagers with votes instead of torches roam the land,
Searching for invisible monsters, putting the flame
To the innocent who simply have a different view
Of the world; our politics turned to a violent game
Farther apart, the chasm impossible to span
When minds are closed to giving or to compromise
The pillars of democracy begin to crumble and fall,
It's impossible to see with closed and shuttered eyes
So I hope for the best, but expect the worst,
What's gone so terrible wrong?

A very good question at the end Mike. I am afraid there is no simple answer.

The US is just one example of the extreme cracks that have appeared recently, all over the globe. Well said, Mike.
