She was a personality in the public eye. But--she was still alone

She stepped onto the runway. The click of her heels, the swoosh of the gown drowned out by the oohs, ahhs, of the awaiting crowd.

She smiled.

One of those fake ones, eyes crinkled, teeth in abundance.

Her perfume canceled out the slight smell of sweat under her arms and between her legs.

She heard the shouts of her name, the photographers' calls, begging, “turn to the right, turn left, show some leg.” She felt wobbly, slightly off-kilter.

She wasn’t used to three-inch heels, to the presence of and annoyance of the public.

Twisting this way and turning that way she finally had enough and with a gentle wave and a nod of her head, she took two steps away from the damn spotlight.

‘Almost there’, she said in her head, her tongue stuck to the roof of her mouth.

Glad she didn’t have to speak. Glad that all they cared about was the outside, the superficial.

She left the confines of the runway struck by the thought that here she was at the top, the pinnacle of her career and yet?—?.

She was just a rag doll, to be pulled in all directions, petted as a favorite dog or cat.

And when the lights dimmed, when all alone she was just that?—?alone.
