My parents met at an underground church. They were living in a dark place called the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. It was a one-party state. My mom was 15, visiting from another city. My dad was 20, preaching that day.

When it was time to break bread, they sat at the table, facing each other. She shyly lowered her eyes. He’s probably not noticing me like I’m noticing him, she thought. I’m just a kid to him.

That was the one and only time she would see him in the underground. That very year, her family was given permission to leave the USSR and return to the homeland of her forefathers. She didn’t know it, but my dad’s family was in that same exodus back to Germany.

Five years later at a fellowship, out in the open and free, my parents met again. This time he definitely noticed her. They married the following winter, on a Saturday. It happened to be February 14, which happened to be a holiday. A holiday they’d never heard of.

What the devil intended for your ancestors' destruction, in their Babylonian exile under King Joseph Nebuchadnezzar--God intended for good! Praise Him for your parents' meeting even in what looked like the darkest of times.
