I happened to get nudged by a new mini-surge of Yeti lore and legend, and thought I'd plumb the theme in some poetic fashion. I hope you enjoy the trip!

Footprints On The Roof Of The World

Tall in the airy heights and peaks,
...and mountain-vista stuff,
......I search in quest of Yeti,
.........'tween summit, and
......................................deep-chasm bluff.
From roaring chute of river's rush,
...well surmounting Tibet's plateau*;
......above both tree and living line
.........my Himalayan trek must go.
I seek the elusive footprint;
...document rumor of this or that;
......poke around for scraps of skin or fur,
.........or rare, mythic, frozen scat.
I look with keenest sympathy,
...for what all high-country folk believe.
......(This proof-less local beast of lore
.........is no mere legend to deceive.)
Supposed tracks, in lofty snow,
...where the transiting specter strolls,
......imprint, on imagination,
.........more mystique than old Sanskrit scrolls.
The hardiest, part-thrive in green season,
...where the sinuous water flows.
......Perhaps Yeti inhabit some Shangri-La,
.........in a coulee which no one knows.
So down and up, and in-between,
...I seek the buggers out:
......Massive furry ghosts of human kin,
.........or inexplicable ape holdout.
At night I view a shock of stars,
...beyond flaps of warm-refuge tent,
......and I listen, most intently,
.........for any echo of Yeti lament.
Frost-bitten and frozen danger,
...thin air, avalanche, and all,
......are worth mortal ecstasy
.................................................to purely once
.........hear that abominable, chilling call.
