As I scanned my old art files getting pictures ready for a online art gallery, I happened upon a cover I did for our company employee magazine, March 1979 on energy conservation. I decided to refine the art and write my opinion of our condition today, nationally and across the world.

ENERGY CONSERVATION IS A MUST!

Article and Graphic Drawing by Thomas Virgil Dubé - February 2021

At the Independent Life and Accident Insurance Company I was employed 36 years, during the 1970s key executives initiated an in-house program to parallel national conservation effort, cost effectiveness concerning waste management within both our home office and many field offices located throughout the south. The program was meant to encourage all employees to cut corners in their working functionality, personal conduct, etc. It was a privilege I worked close with these officials doing my part as a graphic artist to produce flyers, posters, even a cartoon series they proposed that was published in our company magazines: PASSWORD, and THE FIELD NEWS.

The accompanying colorized pen & ink drawing was one of my efforts I created for the cover of the March 1979 issue of PASSWORD, the Home Office employee magazine. Recently eliminating the upper magazine masthead, I sectioned a portion of the old cover for the purpose of using the central point of interest as a new picture for my art gallery I am preparing. It, and all of the bygone company art I purposely collected over my tenure at Independent Life, has served a definitive purpose at the time of their origination. Some art I come upon today in my file morgue I see as extra interesting, and have taken liberty to alter and produce an updated fresh picture, as I did with this particular motivational artwork. Ironically, the message it conveys is significantly more important during this time in our lives than when 52 years ago I created it, energy conservation and waste and pollution management now paramount. The message it conveys compelled me to do a project, revitalize the art and write a message in light of today’s universal challenges.

There was a time when crude oil prices spiked to record levels and people became more aware of the importance of energy and conserving it that affected fundamentally everyone. The 1970s energy crisis happened when the United States, Canada, Western Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, faced critical petroleum shortages thus hiked prices. The watershed problem ultimately lessened economic growth in many countries as crude oil surged in price per barrel.

Presently, people universally concerned are asking three important questions. One, is unmanaged waste dumped on land and in the sea and industrial pollutants spewed into the atmosphere directly causing climate change to disastrously harm Earths’ eco system and potentially bring about a collapse of our present socioeconomic infrastructure, more concerning a sixth catastrophic mass extinction of global life? Two, is the same happening whereby humanity is accelerating an already natural climate change – in other words, speeding a natural process along? Three, are these questions raised baseless and merely hyped hysteria as is believed by many doubters of broad social status? Personally, after seeing report after report in the media, my wife Sharon and I also viewing topnotch science and nature documentaries, and me reading scientific material by established authorities over decades, unreservedly, I crunch the third question and throw it into the nearest trashcan.

Geologically in the field and biologically in labs by consummate scientists, they have identified five mass life extinctions on Planet Earth as occurring in the past four hundred million years. Also, there is telltale evidence of many prior over time when life was predominantly developing in complexity and even before when multi-cellular organisms were under rapid assault by forces they could not adjust to quick enough to withstand. Evidence points theoretically to natural triggers bringing about these disastrous spontaneous epochs: high meteor impact in early Earth history, the planets’ orbital fluctuation around the Sun primarily caused by gravitational tug of giants Jupiter and Saturn during stretches of episodic planetary alignment to promote intense atmospheric heat and deep freeze ice ages, plus extreme volcanism, hence severe geological shifts, including toxic environment. Not stressed publicly enough - our planets’ life cycle is very dynamic, ever changing. Our very existence ironically is a consequence of our predecessors in the long chain of life facing rising natural pressures and adapting to survive. Had man existed during any one of these natural epochs that was devastating to living organisms, his intelligence and technology, his conduct at our level today, would not have saved him.

Some top authorities are now estimating we have approximately a decade to alter our behavior and get climate change under control from our involvement in damaging and maybe altering our planets’ precious eco system. Not doing so means humanity and life at many levels could suffer dire consequences - into the future our offspring to carry the brunt and likely to suffer.

Far beyond that and whatever happens on our part, Planet Earth will continue its ever-evolving existence heading to an eventual fate synchronized with the Sun a medium-size star as it also lives out its approximate ten billion year life cycle. As with all in nature arising from indestructible energy at subatomic level, matter evolves; from a beginning, processes through channels of existence, and ultimately ends to be as it began.

But this is now, our stretch of time on our wonderful planet and our chance to act, respond to the threat, the evidence mounting and clear, hard decisions to be made and hopefully coordinated between us the stewards of Mother Earth. Paramount, fundamental truth ... no matter who you are we are all in this looming crisis together ... to act in accord with wisdom, caution, conscientious and assertiveness, that should be nothing less than a must!

Be safe … Thomas Virgil Dubé.
