In her defense, Alice did wait for the White Rabbit.  She waited and waited for what seemed an eternity.  Then again, perhaps it was longer.  She’d eaten all the cakes and drunk all the cordials, had grown larger and smaller until it became a bore.  She’d sung every song she could remember and made up quite a few new ones, and she’d recited poem after poem until her tongue tickled.  But finally she’d had enough.  It wasn’t as if she hadn’t been through this with him before.

Alice came across the caterpillar while wandering yet again through the gardens, her only respite from monotony for here things changed daily.  Oh, not just in the way you might expect a garden to change, with new leaves peeping and vines curling, not in this garden.  In this garden music sprouted as color from the mulching bunching earth, in every hue and according to no particular rule other than that violins were always green.

“Hello,” it said, and Alice jumped.  A yellow trumpet sounded just then, in response perhaps.  Those daffodils do have a sense of humor.

When she’d recovered her equilibirum Alice observed the newcomer in silence.  He was green as limes and frogs and clover.  But then he was blue as sky and sea and silk, and then again as orange as…  Well, indeed he changed himself continuously and so why bother with describing it at all, she thought.

And yet, something constantly changing was certainly preferable to everything always staying the same.  “Good day,” said Alice.

“Do you like music?” asked the caterpillar hopefully.

“Indeed, I do,” Alice replied.

“I know of a place,” said the caterpillar, “where the music never ends.”

“I think I should like that very much,” said Alice.  “Shall we go then?”

And so they went, and Alice forgot all about the silly White Rabbit and his silly drama.
