I started out writing about Nature and Spring not meshing, but I got bored. So guess what I ended up with.

There is something strange going on, it is the end of March and a Road-Runner showed up in our yard today. Road-Runners are summer hunters around this area of Southern California.

They seem to show up just when the lizard population explodes with a new generation. But the new generation is best eaten when they are larger, so the births of lizards in March are just about right for July feeding.

So you see, to see a Road-Runner in my yard this early in the season is odd; something is out of whack.

The Mocking Birds are early too, building nests and making themselves known throughout the neighborhood.

The same goes for the different families of Finches, I'm seeing them gathering nesting material everyday.

You never know about the Towhees, though, they are all over the place and chasing one another so much that it is hard to tell if they are the parents or the offspring.

Oh, and there has been an increase in the small yellow Lesser-Goldfinches too; their family units seem to be getting larger.

We can't go by Swallow-Time anymore. They used to arrive in late March and they would construct, or reoccupy their mud nests that were always built up near the top of the Gable of each house. But when a multitude of new homes were built closer to the river, our mud loving birds stopped coming. It's too bad too, they were very helpful removing the summer's flying bugs.

With the loss of the Swallows, nature had to re-balance. It took her awhile but now we have more Phoebes and an assortment of individual Fly-catchers.

Oh well. ... Back to my subject of nature being out of touch with spring's timetable, or maybe it's a possible conspiracy.

I knew something was really out of whack even before the Road-Runner showed up. And I knew when my wife's flowering plants started blooming in early March; way too soon.

I was telling her all about the theory that the government is secretly altering the weather to keep patriots from voting; they know most of us live east and south-east of of the Texas western border. So they have repositioned the Earth's Axis so we will get debilitating weather conditions during the winter season; of course they are doing it little at a time so we won't notice.

And just when I was at the culmination of my Hypothesis, my wife stopped me!

She smiled very sweetly and said, "I gave my plants the Bloom-Food that was left over from last summer. This is California, things bloom sooner and longer here. More hours of sunlight, yah-know?"

Well she can make all the excuses she wants, but I'm sure I saw some sort of Collar on that Road-Runner, and it was probably a government test of some kind.

Oh shit, maybe it was a camera and they have me under surveillance!

LOL --- Actually some of us in southern California were thinking that maybe we could build a pipeline from the Flood-prone areas of the US and connect it to the California Aqueduct, that would solve a lot of problems at both ends.

Conspiracies are everywhere JEF. The equinox was four days ago (here) - life responds to light more than temperature but there are always little flucuations to make life interesting. Like when frost takes out my spuds! You mention about swallows taking out flying insects - twenty years ago we couldn't have our window open with the light on because moths and bugs flew in, nowadays the moths and buds have gone. Have you noticed the same thing where you are? Usianguke

Thanks for the reply, moa rider, and no, the flying insects in this area are still with us. However, I live at the edge of a "Nature Preserve" so there is lots of Scrub Land all around the houses.
