Gently, Sweetly Home Again - Part 9

by Allen Henriquez

Wilbur: a big guy, six two, two hundred and twenty pounds, with a lot of hair, and a beard, speaks in a loud voice, and drinks gin and tonic, asks “Zack what are you drinkin’?”

“Sparkling water on the rocks.” Zack replies

Elise sips her rum and coke and studies her ex-boyfriend as if he were an alien from Pluto, the so-called non-planet.

Elise, Wilbur, and Zack sip their drinks with Wilbur asking “So how was it?”

“Afghanistan, Iraq, deployed once to each, in a rifle company.” Zack

“And you made it back?” Elise

“Yes, I did four, with an extension to five.” Zack

“You were gone a long time. You liked it so much that you extended, why didn’t you just stay in?” Elise asks

“I might go back. I’ll see what’s out here for me before I decide.” Zack

“I’m working as a carpenter, my boss is getting plenty of work.” Wilbur

“Hey, that’s cool. What happen to you I thought you enlisted a month after I left for boot camp?” Zack

“Yes, I joined but I wasn’t cool with boot camp. I got out on a general discharge, and I came back home.” Wilbur

“Yeah, and married my girl.” Zack states with a grin

“I wasn’t your girl, Zack.” Elise states

“Oh sorry, it must be some type of post-traumatic shock.” Zack states with a bigger smile.

“It sure is, you’re confused. I always liked Wilbur.” Elise confirms

“Yeah, I found that out in the ‘Dear John’ letter you sent me.” Zack still smiling

“All is fair in love and war, Zack.” Wilbur states with a smile.
