Gently, Sweetly Home Again - Part 11

by Allen Henriquez

A handmade wooden bed with an overhead shelter on a hinge with screened in windows surrounding it, is how Zack’s friend Nate slept. The bed is in a tree and camouflaged by leaves and branches. Nate is in fact up in the tree taking a nap. Zack is taking a daytime walk through Prospect Park, and passes under the tree unaware Nate is there. Zack enjoys the beauty of birds singing and the splendor of nature. Zack unknowingly walks passed the area of Nate’s tree bunk. The are is a paradise of green and trees but something instinctively tells him to stop.

“The First. The First. The First Infantry.” Zack yells out.

Zack stands listening and looking around him. He then decides to let the idea go, and starts out of the park when three neighborhood dudes approach him. “What’re you yelling the first for punk?” The shorter of the three asks. “Who cares” the tallest guy states. The three dudes attack Zack punching and kicking him. The shorter man pulls a knife, but Zack kicks him in the right knee then in the groin, he goes down in pain. Zack picks up his knife and slashes the taller man, which causes a leak, and the motivation for the third man to take several steps back, only he pulls a pistol, a thirty-two caliber revolver. The third man, before he shoots Zack, falls to the ground as if kicked in the back. Nate as if an optical illusion is standing in his place.
