Feet on feet of snow

Having fallen, rested.

Rearranged by wind

Reshaped by sun and soil

Melted, and refrozen.

Layer on layer of snow

Heaped as ancient Earth

Sediments deposited.

Heat, cold, gravity

Winter's own metamorphic

Written history.

Seep and seep, dear snow.

Saturate the land

Nourish the drought-wearied.

Trickle down mountainsides,

Swell the rivers and creeks.

Protect us from summer sparks.
