The Toll
We all make those little concessions
White lies that we tell ourselves to survive
The harsh reality of the human condition
That no one wants to talk about
Is that none of us is getting out of here alive
Still we push and we pull
Maneuver and cajole
Trying to portray our better angles
For others to see
It’s all the same in the end
Each soul has its own truth to defend
To God, mankind, the universe or posterity
There is no good way out
Whether secular or devout
The cosmos plays no favorites
In this game
It’s just the price all must pay
For the love shared along the way
And really
Given a choice
Wouldn’t you do it all the same?
Every single step that led here
Through all the laughter and the tears
Every joy
Every heartache played a part
Without judgment nor remorse
Each life runs its own course
At the end
Every time traveler
Offers up their own heart
