Gently, Sweetly Home Again - Part 14

by Allen Henriquez

Marcy Projects

Nostrand Avenue Brooklyn

Curtis “Calamity” Bowman is staying with his older sister Beverly and her two kids Deshawn and Bella. Curtis sleeps on the sofa but helps pay the rent. “Calamity” Curtis most appropriately has a parttime job at a junkyard, in East Williamsburg, however after meeting with his old Army buddies he gathers up his D.D. 214, discharge paper, and gets himself squared away.

Calamity would in several weeks, with help, work Construction fulltime in Downtown Brooklyn, and get a room a few blocks from where Nate stays. Zack’s goal is to pool their funds for a year and with G.I. Loan open up a Convenience store on Union near Broadway and the train station; Coffee, newspapers, Bottled water, etc.

Zack who works at “New Market” on the 4 to 12 shift with Nate, is uncrating boxes of supermarket product when his cellphone goes off. The phone knocks out his dream of the Convenience store but the knock out is a real knock, the call is from Denise Kirkpatrick.

Three weeks later

Denise and Zack are having pasta at a restaurant in Downtown Brooklyn with Northern Italian cuisine. Denise and Zack are drinking Chardonnay and eating a pasta salad.

“You know what my apartment needs? A dog.” Denise

“A dog?” Zack

“Yes, a well trained one, one I can take for walks, and have as a companion.” Denise.

“Are you sure you’re not talking about a guy?” Zack says with a smile

“No, a dog, silly, a barking pet you have to house train.” Denise

Zack laughs.

“You see that I’m right don’t you?” Zack

The two laugh.

Nate’s cellphone rings. Nate listens. “Ok. Ok.” Nate hangs up the stating “My Father had an accident.”
