The orbitoclast was a tool that looked rather like an ice pick. It was invented in 1948 to aid the performing of lobotomies.

Picking My Brain

So I can’t move,

but I can still see

and that... weapon

will be the death of me.

My mouth won’t obey,

won’t make a sound

the orbitoclast nears

and my eyes go round.

Not fair! Not fair!

I’m in so much pain

as that ice pick digs

in through my brain.

Yep, it's unbelievable what used to go on. I'm guessing lobotomies are still performed, but I can't imagine that they use quite such implements.
