Your author recounts the strange dream she had last night

Last night I had a dream. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Most people dream most nights, even if they don't remember them. But this one I remember, not for what happened, but for the feeling of strangeness.

I dreamt that I woke in the early hours of the morning to knocking at the door. I knew with that dream certainty that it had to be my mother, she works nights, but with her health issues it isn't too unusual for her to be sent home early. So I make my way downstairs to get the door.

She looked different, taller maybe, her facial features sharper. She didn't say anything, just stood there in complete silence and stared. She must be really not feeling well. But there was a tight, cold feeling in the pit of my stomach at the strangeness, the offness that I was feeling looking at the figure that was my mother standing motionless at the door.

Eager for the dream to move on I backed away from the door. "What are you waiting for? Come in!" That awful feeling of unease had swirled up from my stomach and was now twirling around my throat as she crossed the threshold.

After that I must have been returned to the blackness of unconsciousness since I can't remember anything else, just waking up for real in my bed.

But still, although the dream was mundane in itself I couldn't escape that feeling of wrongness and dread.

Making my way downstairs I saw that my mum was already home. But she was sitting motionless on the sofa staring at the blank TV. Weirder still our dog who'd normally be sitting right next to her was cowering in a corner.

I'm not sure what to do now. Hopefully this is still part of the same dream. Please let it be a dream.
