DOUBLE THIRTEEN

The H13N13 avian influenza originated in China during the fall of 2030 and swept north to Russia. From there, it moved west to Europe and east across the Bering Sea to Canada. It also spread south to Indonesia and Australia. Within months, no corner of the planet was untouched.

In America, migrating ducks took the bird flu to Florida, where it infected that state’s enormous domestic poultry population, then made the jump to man.

It was an incredibly contagious and lethal strain. By early summer, almost half of the world’s eight billion inhabitants had perished. The mountains of decomposing bodies stacked everywhere around the globe brought hepatitis, HIV, intestinal pathogens, tuberculosis, cholera and other illnesses, which soon accounted for another two billion dead. With the demise of organized agriculture, starvation set in, bringing the Earth’s total population to well under one billion.

Most towns and even major cities seriously shrank or were wholly reclaimed by Mother Nature. Wild animals, including escaped zoo specimens, roamed the streets and forests at will.

It was in this scenario that the human race began to reboot and seek its place in the scheme of things again.
