It seems to me that the moralist is the most useless and contemptible of creatures. They are useless in that they would expend their energies upon making judgements rather than upon gaining knowledge, for the reason that judgment is easy and knowledge is difficult. They are contemptible in that their judgements reflect a vision of themselves which in their ignorance and pride they would impose upon the world. My opinion to you is, do not become a moralist; you will destroy your art and your mind. One does not deceive oneself about the consequences of one's acts; one deceives oneself about the ease with which one can live with those consequences.
