Anthony the anxious Ant finds himself all alone, with no friends. He finally realizes that kindness towards others is the way to make friends and sets off to make amends. However, as he crosses the stream in search of his lost friends he comes across Sid the hungry Salmon.

Anthony the Anxious Ant is on the long and winding path again.

Today he is searching for more new friends, but word had gone out amongst the woodland animals that he is not to be trusted.

‘I have no friends’.

‘It preys on my mind’.

‘Stop being naughty’.

‘I must try to be kind’.

On he went along the long and winding path in search of Leo, his friend the Lion.

Eventually he came to the big circus tent.

Leo, the Lion was behind bars locked up inside a cage.

The Lion looked sad.

‘I’ve been really bad, that’s why I’m in here. Eaten too many friends, now go and stay clear’.

The Ant replied.

‘I have no friends’.

‘It preys on my mind’.

‘Stop being naughty’.

‘I must try to be kind’.

On he went along the long and winding path in search of Ollie, his friend the Owl.

Eventually he came to the Oak tree by the big lake.

There was no sign of the Owl, just some feathers at the base of the tree. A very large snake slithered from behind the tree trunk.

‘Nothing left here’, said the slithering snake.

‘That Owl got what he deserved after eating my mate’.

The Ant replied.

‘I have no friends’.

‘It preys on my mind’.

‘Stop being naughty’.

‘I must try to be kind’.

On he went along the long and winding path.

Eventually, Anthony came to a stream. There were stepping-stones to get across the flowing water.

Anthony sat for a while. Then a buzzing sound from behind caused him to look up.

There was a swarm of Flying Ants approaching. One kind Ant stopped and spoke.

‘What’s up Ant, do you need to talk? Come fly with us, no need to walk’.

The Ant replied.

‘I have no friends’.

‘It preys on my mind’.

‘Stop being naughty’.

‘I must try to be kind’.

The friendly Ant flew on to join the swarm making one last effort to befriend the lonely one he’d left behind. ‘Come fly with us, be our friend’.

Anthony was stubborn. He didn’t much like flying but did want more friends. He decided to hop over the stream on the stepping-stones.

He hopped from stone to stone.

When he was half-way across the stream Anthony stopped for a rest.

Whilst resting he saw his friends Leo and Ollie on the other side of the stream. There were other woodland animals with them. They were all laughing, having fun.

Anthony called over to them.

‘Hello my old friends’.

‘You have been on my mind’.

‘I won’t be naughty’.

‘I’m going to be kind’.

On he went hopping from stone to stone across the stream.

Sid the salmon loved this silver stream. It had the best and plumpest insects to feed off. As Sid swam up stream, he came across the stepping-stones.

‘I’m a fish who likes a fly. I swim all day and jump real high’.

With a swish of his tail and a shake of the fin, he hopped out of the water with a terrible grin.

Anthony the Anxious Ant was nearly across the stream. Only one more hop and he would be on the other side.

‘Wait for me’, called the Ant, then a last run and jump.

Into the air he rose up, towards a silvery lump.

Sid the big fish, flying high like a flash.

Swallowed the Ant, landing with a big splash.

Leo the lion, Ollie the Owl, and all their friends watched from the other side of the river.

‘Oh dear’, said the Lion.

‘You have been on my mind’.

‘You were wrong to be naughty’.

‘You should have been kind’.

'You weren't really going to eat us were you Leo', asked Gail, the snail'.

'Of course not, you are my friends', roared the Lion.

'And hedgehogs are far too sharp!'. They all laughed.

And on they went along the long and winding path. The Lion, The Owl, the rabbit, snake, mouse, spider, snail, and hedgehog.
