Flash Fiction, 297 words. A foul plot is in play, but to what outcome?

Written by Daniel A.J Barker

At a picturesque mansion embedded in the middle of the countryside, an elderly gentleman sat entranced near his drawing-room window, captivated by nature unfolding across the many acres before him.

“Mr. Chandler, your guest has arrived. Shall I prepare the drinks as agreed, sir?” asked a tired butler peering through the door.

“Oh yes, send that illegitimate bastard through”, the elderly man responded back with a bitter moan, angry at being withdrawn from such a tranquil viewing.

As instructed, his butler left the drawing-room and a smartly dressed middle-aged man entered, with hand extended in greeting. “Please accept my sincerest apologies, Reginald, I hate it that we had to resort to legal action for this meeting, I really do".

“Mr. Chandler! No one calls me Reginald, especially not a parasite like you!”

Taken aback by the old man’s harsh words, the guest quickly dropped into a chair opposite to stop himself from swaying in shock.

“A liar and not a well-mannered one! Pah!” Mr. Chandler spewed with pure disdain.

Before his guest could muster a word, the butler returned with a tray of drinks. Two cups of tea, already poured, a strange metallic odor polluted the air. One cup clearly displayed ‘visitor’ engraved into the fine china, and abruptly presented to the guest with steady hands.

“What is it you want? Money?!”

“No Mr. Chandler. It’s been proven, you're my uncle. Just want the chance to get to know you...”

“So it’s the house then, over my dead body!”

Mr. Chandler took a drink of his cup, suddenly clutched at his throat, collapsed to the floor, and writhed in excruciating pain. Life quickly drained from his face in a matter of mere seconds.

“It would appear I chose the wrong cup!” the butler expressed in pure horror.
