Caught in our own acts, we fail to see the grand performances of nature playing out before us everyday. If only our eyes were open...

The black curtain is stretched tight. It’s time!!! Behind the curtain, some stars are gulping down potions to keep themselves up for the night show; some are polishing themselves at maddening speed to get the glow while few are there yawning in the chairs not ready to go. Failing to put up a show will lead to cut in their share of potion, without which they were only mounds of dust. Realizing this, they pulled themselves from the chairs to face the infinite mirror stretched end to end behind the presently closed black curtain. This watery mirror had 29 shining reflections most of which were adjusting their white shimmered costumes. Bored of dressing the same way every night, Proxima powdered her costume with golden dust. Ariana, the most anxious ones among them was cross-checking the intensity of her shine every second to make sure it doesn’t get put off in mid of show. To keep matters dangerously safe, she drank twice the potion as required for a single night. “That’s a waste”, murmured Proxima. “You have been a star for almost 1000 years now. Don’t you know, the potion is limited unless you are able to win some of it by attracting fans on earth. By the looks on your face, it doesn’t seem to be coming”. Ariana frowned at those words, causing her own light to get dimmed. Noticing this, Proxima instructed, “You seem to forget the rule for stars- “You have to shine until you die”. Ariana, you cannot do anything except shining, not even frowning”. With this reminder in mind, Ariana resumed her cross-checking and Proxima continued powdering herself.

Amid all these tittering tottering of reflections in mirror, one was dead still. The star sitting against this reflection was of the newly born Miranda. She was boring down at her own reflection intently to make sure that she is completely born now. Till yesterday, she was only a mound of dust. After 500 years of failed attempts, she passed the “Grand Pressure test” of Milkyway. And today, a star is beaming back at her in mirror. As the announcement of “Show-Time!!” boomed through the black sky, the other reflections too became still. The stars began taking their positions behind the curtain. The older ones like Ariana and Proxima took the corners and new ones like Miranda were put to center position. In words of Proxima- “The babies don’t know the curveballs of show business and need help to catch eye-balls on earth. So center is best for them”. Holding her center position, Miranda could only imagine her dream becoming reality on other side of this still closed black curtain- The dream to become a star and shine the brightest. She had imagined for so long how people would be filled in awe and wonder looking at her unique glow. How she would put a big smile on every face of earth through her own hard-earned shine. The toil of attempting 500 years of pressure test gave her a unique glow as it was the longest attempt in the history of stars.

Those hard 500 years were melting before her when the black curtain was pulled sharp off all of them. The earth below appeared and a gasp of wonder ran through the new stars in unison. They had seen earth for the first time- The Blue, The Green, The Brown and on them were numerous colorful people. The number of people below were way beyond the star count in this part of earth called “City”. Most stars avoided coming to these parts as they were allergic to the air present here. These 29 were in need of potion, so they accepted whatever shows came their way. And the new ones were usually given a start in “Cities” to let them taste the reality of shows. This kept them grounded after becoming stars.

But the reality below was too bitter to digest for Miranda. No applause and No whistles on their arrival in sky- No smiles and No wonder- Not even a glance at sky. People below were oblivious to the stars above. The stars were as good as mound of dust for them. Miranda again felt like dust. 500 years of pressure test and her hard-earned shine went as unnoticed as she never did become a star. The Galaxy Pressure test seemed easier than standing in center and trying to shine after getting thrown in oblivion. Proxima, a seasoned star was no way expecting any eye-balls from “City”. So, she focused on not letting her shine down by not stressing about it. Ariana always carried potion with her for such emergency situations. She kept on sipping it to keep her spirits high. And Miranda??? She was hit by heavy disappointment and shock which was already numbing her shine. She gathered all her strength and braced herself to live through this black night. “Next time, I will be better prepared”- She instructed herself.

Today, she will pass the night by looking at the magnificence of earth. The place which stars hated and loved the most. “Every star is born as a gift from sky to earth” – This was what she had heard for centuries. But, never did it come to her mind, that the people below may choose to reject this gift. Yet the rule was etched in her mind- “Once you are a star, you have to shine until you die”. She had taken the oath after passing the test. In no way, she can now back out.

The evening crawled to midnight. It seemed 1000 years to Miranda. “Half-left”, she muttered to herself. It was now increasingly difficult for her to shine. The earth was going to sleep. No wonders, No smiles, No eye-balls to gather, except one pair. There lying in lawn, with her hands on back of head and head facing the sky, was a girl. She was searching something in sky- A long forgotten memory of her best friend whom she lost yesterday. A star in sky with a unique red blush caught her attention and she was filled with those old memories. A smile and a tear was what she sent to that star in gratitude. Above, Miranda drank that love filled tear in ecstasy. A divine glow spread on her face as she connected with earth- The place which stars hated and loved the most.
