My favourite colour

If people should ever ask me

I tell them my favourite colour is blue

But that's not what I want to say

That's not the whole truth

I like the navy of twilight above

The sphere of sky ever changing

As the day fades into night

The indigo between light and dark

Azure sky on a Summer's afternoon

The flash of cobalt on a magpie's wing

The cyan clarity of the ocean

As it laps at the shore

My favourite colour

Is the yellow of a rapeseed field

Or the gorse bushes in full bloom

The dandelions scattered across a field

The purple heather of the moor

The brown of Autumn bracken

A blanket of pine needles on a forest floor

The colour of whisky, as deep as his eyes.

My favourite colour is the black of coal

The dark ink shade of the midnight silence

The shadows cast on an unfamiliar path

A crow's feather fallen to the ground

It's the pink of cherry blossom

An explosion of colour in the Spring

Bold, unmissable, petals falling like rain

Reminding me of the house I grew up in

Snowdrops glistening in the forest

The wool of a lamb as they run and leap

The unexpected snowfall on a Winter's morning

The fluffy clouds in a Summer sky

I like the colour of grey in a dry stone wall,

Or the angry clouds threatening rain

Red of sunset blazing across the sky

Or the Holly berries in sharp contrast

Orange I have always admired

The flames of a bonfire burning

Glowing embers as it dies into the dusk

A Robin's chest, the visitor while gardening

My favourite colour is the outdoors

But I can't tell people that

So instead I must say

My favourite colour is blue
