Gazing idly towards the Cheviots

Thoughts lingering on the lands beyond

The distant island lies North West of here

Unseen, too great a distance

Oh, to be a bird and observe

The endless fields passing underneath

Far below as my wings stretch on the breeze

Head held high, eyes fixed on the skyline

Watching as the bright green squares

Give way to irregular shapes, darker colours

The land rises to majestic peaks

Clouds roll in and mist descends

There's an atmosphere further North

Taste it in the sharp fresh tang of the air

Distant ribbons of roads almost disappear

They give way to long lochs, wild forests

The bodies of water become larger

Until they fill my field of vision

Soaring over the Minch now

From the Cheviots to the Cuillin

But I am here gazing forlornly out of the window

Attention drawn uncontrollably

To the fields outside, to the horizon

Like an urgent whisper in my head

A land I know so well, although I've never been

Stories heard from others, told with such passion

Dreaming of seeing that island for myself

Eyes held Skyewards.
