Isaac’s Ice Cream

By Shad Henriquez

It’s a lovely day in Queens, New York. Blue sky and sunshine in the afternoon. With the temperature at 98 degrees, it’s only fitting to cool off by having a refreshing ice cream cone. The number one ice cream man in Far Rockaway, Isaac Hunt, with his own company “Isaac’s Ice Cream”, is a major go-to on days such as these. Hunt is a dark, brown skinned 44-year-old, with a stocky body and a big belly. He stands 5’2” in height, wears a white shirt, pants, and hat, along with a big smile. His hours are from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. He is currently serving a young mother and her 5-year-old daughter.

Isaac

“Here you go.” Hands the mother two ice cream cones.

Mom

“Thank you so much.”

Isaac

“That’s a cute girl you have there.”

Mom

“Thank you. She’s five now.”

Isaac

“How ‘bout that? She’s big for her age! What’s her name?”

Mom

“Daisy.”

Isaac

“What a fitting name. She’s blossoming already!”

Mom

“Thank you. Say thank you to the nice man, Daisy!”

Daisy doesn’t respond, only looks at Isaac with a blank expression.

Mom

“I’m sorry. She doesn’t feel like talking.”

Isaac

“That’s all right.”

Daisy’s mother hands her an ice cream cone. Daisy holds it in her hand but doesn’t take her eyes off Isaac. Isaac looks back at Daisy, perplexed as to why she’s so fascinated by him.

Mom

“Don’t stare, Daisy! It’s not polite!”

Isaac

“It’s okay, ma’am. I was waiting to see who’d blink first!”

Isaac and Daisy’s mother laugh loudly for a few seconds.

Mom

Walking off with Daisy. “Have a good day!”

As the two get further away from the ice cream truck, Daisy continues to stare in the direction of Isaac. Five minutes later, Isaac looks at his wristwatch. It reads 7:00 p.m. With his shift being over, Isaac pulls out of the playground area and drives down the road. After passing five blocks, he turns off his truck’s music and backs up into an alleyway. He turns off the truck, gets out, and walks toward a man standing in the distance.

Isaac

“How’d it go?”

Frank

“Held up a liquor store for $500.”

Isaac

“Where’s the money?”

Frank

“With Buster at the hideout.”

Isaac

“Were you followed?”

Frank

“I don’t think so.”

Isaac

“Well, were you, or weren’t you? There’s no room for any doubt.”

Frank

“Not from what I could see.”

Isaac

“Make sure you buy a pair of glasses with your share.”

Frank

“I’m sorry, boss. We had to get out of there fast.”

Isaac

“Why were you in a hurry?”

Frank

“There were two cops on the street corner.”

Isaac

“You held up a liquor store with two cops on the street corner?!”

Frank

“They showed up during the robbery! I saw them through the window!”

Isaac

“Did they see you?!”

Frank

“I don’t’ know! Buster and I ran as fast as we could!”

Isaac

“Are you telling me that you and Buster ran with $500 in broad daylight away from two cops on the same street corner?”

Frank

“Maybe they didn’t notice.”

Isaac

“Did you at least escape in the getaway car?”

Frank

“Yes, but we got a flat tire.”

Isaac

“I can’t believe how stupid you guys are. We went over everything in detail and you still screwed it up. I said to rob one store in the neighborhood. Anything that was easy and with very few cameras. Have the getaway car nearby, wear masks, and don’t kill anyone. Thanks to you fools we’ll probably be caught by tomorrow.”

Frank

“Sorry, boss. Do you want to switch places next time?”

Isaac

“Switch places?! Imagine a fat midget robbing a liquor store and running away from cops while holding $500!”

Later that day Isaac scheduled a meeting for 9:30 p.m. at their hideout (the basement in Isaac’s ice cream factory) to discuss with Frank and Buster their next course of action. Buster wanted to rob a bank, but Isaac wants to keep things small. Frank suggested a toy store, but that was shot down with laughter. The trio finally settled on a little-known pawn shop that gets good business. Isaac figures for Buster to hold up the cashier, as well as take small items of value that the three could sell on the black market. When Buster finishes collecting in the pawn shop, he’ll leave and jump in the getaway car park directly in front, with Frank driving the two back to the hideout. The pawn shop closes at 11:00 p.m. and is 15 minutes away from the hideout. Isaac is confident that the plan will work, so he plans to go home and get some sleep.

The next day during Isaac’s work shift, a good friend of his, Harry, orders a vanilla ice cream cone. Harry is, coincidently, a police officer.

Isaac

“One vanilla cone for my good friend.”

Harry

“Thanks, Isaac. Nothing like cold ice cream on a hot day!”

Isaac

“Yes, sir. Supposed to be 103 today.”

Harry

Takes a lick of his ice cream cone. “I got a funny call on my walkie talkie earlier. Two guys were arrested last night for robbing a pawn shop. They almost got away, but the driver crashed into a lamp post. The kicker is that they said they were on their way to your ice cream factory, because you were their boss! Isn’t that hilarious?” Takes another lick of his ice cream cone.

Isaac

“That is hilarious!” Chuckles.

Harry

“They kept rambling on about how you’ve organized multiple robberies with them and that there’s cash stored away in your basement.”

Isaac

Laughs. “Just goes to show that criminals aren’t too bright.”

Harry

“No, sir.” Takes several more licks of his ice cream. “This is tasty stuff, Isaac. You should have some yourself. Perfect day for it.”

Isaac

“Maybe when my shift’s over.”

Harry

“Good talking with you, Isaac. Take care.” Walks away.

Isaac

“All right, Harry.”

Isaac was very concerned. Not only were Frank and Buster caught, but they named him as the mastermind. The police probably won’t take them seriously, because of Isaac’s reputation and image in the community. But there’s still doubt in his mind. Enough of it to make him worried for another 2 hours and 15 minutes before the end of his shift. He smiled and took orders until 7 o’clock. Afterwards, he drove to his factory and went directly to the basement. Everything looked the same from what he could see. Isaac goes towards the back of the room to open a door filled with thousands of stolen dollars. He’s relieved to find it still there. Some of the bills fell on the floor when the door opened. As Isaac bends down to pick it up, he hears footsteps from above. Whoever was up there was making their way downstairs. The closer they got; the faster Isaac frantically threw money threw money back in the storage door. A good amount of it was still on the floor. With the approaching footsteps almost on top of him, he shut the door, and stuffed the rest of the money under his shirt, figuring his stomach will conceal it. Isaac turns around to see who is there. It was Harry.

Isaac

Smiling nervously. “Harry! What a pleasant surprise! You’re technically not supposed to be down here. I’m working on a new flavor that’s a secret. Everyone’s gonna love it!”

Harry

“I kept thinking to myself: ‘why you?’ Those criminals could’ve said they were working for anyone. Why pick you? An ice cream man? Didn’t make any sense. So, I put it out of my mind. Then I started thinking about how specific they were with the details they mentioned. Timeframes scheduled for meetups, non-violent tactics, how money was divided, stolen items being resold as an extra profit. I argued with myself: ‘you’ve been friends with Isaac for 10 years. He’s not a criminal. These guys are lying on him.’ But somewhere in the back of my mind, I wanted to be sure.”

Isaac

“Harry, I’ve been working hard all my life. Was always just another fat kid on the block that got picked on. Never had a knack for being skillful in any way. I was lucky enough to start my own business. Doesn’t make much money, but it puts food on the table. Not to mention that it makes people happy.”

Harry

“What’s that poking through your shirt, Isaac?”

Isaac

Laughing. “Nothing more than a few extra pounds!”

Money slides through Isaac’s pants legs and onto the floor. Harry looks at the money, then back up at Isaac with a small frown, disappointed.

Harry

“I guess you never really have a friend until you lose them.”

Isaac

“What are you going to do, Harry?”

Harry

Sighs. “Take you in for questioning.”

Harry approaches Isaac with handcuffs. As he gets closer, Isaac punches Harry in the stomach, causing him to bend over. Isaac then double fists him across the back of the head, causing Harry to fall to the floor. Isaac runs as fast as he can up the stairs, out of his factory, and into his ice cream truck. At his size, this takes Isaac about 60 seconds. Harry rises to his feet, races up the stairs, and exits the factory. Isaac has the misfortune of an engine that won’t turn on. Harry quickly approaches the truck. Isaac finally gets the engine to turn on when Harry reaches through the window to grab at Isaac’s shirt collar. Isaac struggles to reach for a weapon. When he gets his hands on it, he swings and hits Harry in the head with an ice cream scooper. The truck takes off as Harry lays on the ground. He rolls to his feet, gets in his police car, and drives after Isaac.

Isaac drives recklessly by swerving past cars. Harry does a good job of tailing Isaac without going too fast or hitting any other vehicles. Isaac manages to evade Harry for several minutes before making one sharp turn too many. This causes his truck to topple over, slamming to the ground and killing Isaac almost instantly from the impact. Harry pumps the brakes, gets out of his car, and goes to investigate. The truck had ice cream, as well as blood, oozing out from inside. Harry looked through the remains of the front windshield to see his old friend deceased.

The death of Isaac Hunt resulted in his company name brand being removed from all establishments. His image has been tainted with his crimes now revealed to the public. The factory has been taken over by someone else. A 22-year-old black woman with her own company name: “Sally’s Soft Cones”. At the moment, she is serving two customers in front of a playground.

Sally

“One vanilla fudge and one strawberry cone. Hope you enjoy!”

Mom

“Thank you so much. Say thank you to the nice lady, Daisy!”

Daisy

Smiling. “Thank you!”

Sally

Smiling back. “You’re very welcome!”

Daisy and her mother walk away along the sidewalk, with plans of going to the beach. Daisy continues to look at Sally. Noticing this, Sally gives Daisy a goodbye wave. Daisy smiles and happily waves back in response.
