WHEN RAINBOWS DISAPPEAR

By Al Garcia

There is a magical splendor at seeing a rainbow against the grandeur of an open sky.  It astounds the mind and evokes a sense of wonderment and awe.  Its beauty beyond expression, other than mere silence and acknowledgment that for one brief moment nature smiled upon the occupants of its domain.

Rainbows captivate and hypnotize the human mind.  To realize that the brilliance of a rainbow surrounds us and encircle us each moment of each day, belies the power and the beauty of water, air and sunlight, and how one acts upon the other in perfect harmony.

If only life could match the brilliance of a rainbow after a summer’s rain.  If only life could equal the radiance of a rainbow’s glow.  If only we could live in harmony, to match the rhythm and the cadence of an emerging rainbow as it begins to form.  If only we could harass and link our own kaleidoscopic maze of colors and beliefs into a rainbow of human radiance that could keep hope and dreams alive.

If only we could see the beauty of the rainbow, without having to look behind the spectral splendor of nature’s smile, when the colors begin to fade and eventually disappear.  The view behind the rainbow reveals the complexity of what we have made of the simplicity of life.  When once the living earth evolved and flourished, giving sustenance and mystery to all things great and small, we now have gleaned its essence to the very core of our creation and what lies beyond.  What lies behind the rainbow belies the beauty of its spectacle, and of the fragile harmony of man and of nature.

It is when rainbows disappear that the momentary joy escapes the muted and disappointed heart.  We wish upon a star, and dream of golden treasures at the end of every rainbow.  Stars and rainbows give us hope, and take us back to times before we learned how easily dreams are shattered and wishes smothered.  It’s called growing up and finding out how fleeting, deceiving and momentary life can be.

When rainbows disappear, the radiance, beauty and brilliance that astounds and astonishes for one brief moment, returns to its elements and fades and blends back into its naturalness.  And we are left behind with visions of hopes and dreams, that like rainbows, begin to fade and disappear with time.  But unlike the rainbows that disappear, we leave behind our radiance, our beauty and our brilliance in hearts and minds that keep alive our dream.

The human rainbow retains its brilliance and its radiance for a lifetime and beyond.  And like the sun and the moon, and the stars that shine above, we are what keeps hope alive, and dreams fulfilled.
