ECHOES OF THE SOUND OF WAR

By Al Garcia

I hear the sound of the wind and feel its cold fingers embrace the contours of my being.  I hear the sound of time as the seconds tick away the heaviness of the night.  I hear the quiet of the darkness as it consumes the light and draws the warmth into its core.  I hear the sound of loneliness through the flowing tears that fall upon a shattered heart.  Sounds that devour and chill my spirit and my very being -- sounds that penetrate the depth of the essence of me and of those that lie upon the cold damp red-stained soil beneath my feet.

I hear the sound that betrays the harmony and serenity of the beauty that surrounds me.  I hear the sound that shatters the tranquility of my thoughts.  And it is then that I hear the sound that stops a beating heart.  It is the sound that erupts as suddenly as it fades into nothingness, leaving behind the scent of death and shattered dreams in a field of quiet solitude.

These were the sounds that frightened me the most.  These were the sounds that defined my world so long ago so far away.  These were the sounds that made young boys tremble and grown me shudder.  These were the sounds of war that never wither or wane.  Sounds that amplify the throbbing ache of loss.  Sounds that linger beyond the realm of time.

I shut my eyes and cover my ears, yet the sights and sounds of war persists.  It is the sound of the night that brings back the specters and the phantoms that haunt my mind and pains my wounded soul.  It is the echoes of the sound of war – echoes that shatter the silence of the night.
