VOICES IN THE NIGHT

By Al Garcia

I hear voices in the night that wake me from my slumber.  They speak to me of times long past and at times of things to come.  They are the voices of stolen souls that echo in the night.  They are voices of the vestiges of once vibrant dreams and memories that once blossomed and then withered and then died.  They are the voices of those that touched my heart and helped complete the outline of my fragile soul.  Now, only voices in the night heard only by my grieving heart.

The touch, the scent, the sense of them no longer felt or seen.  Yet their voices linger beyond the span of time.  It is the night that brings back the past and the voices that made me feel so safe, appreciated, valued and even loved.  It is the voices in the night that clarify and illuminate my life, as I close my eyes and begin to dream and drift off into the darkness that makes the voices eventually fade away.

Time never erases the voices of our past.  Time only amplifies the words once shared and heard that touched our soul or warmed and moved our heart.  They are the voices of the night that remind us of who we were once upon a time.  The voices still vibrant and strong -- still so much a part of us.

And in the middle of night when I hear the voices in the night, I am aware again, that nothing really ever ends.  The touch, the scent, the sense of them may disappear and fade, but the poetry of their words, whether simple or eloquent, forever lingers within our soul and become our dreams and memories and eventually the voices in the night that cradles us to sleep.
