THE WIND, THE CANDLE AND THE DARKNESS

By Al Garcia

There is a time for all things to be born.  There is a time for all things to flourish and thrive.  And there is a time for all things to end.

Like a candle in the wind, wavering and flickering, unsteady and even trembling, we continue to light the world around us with our words and deeds, visions and delusions, fantasies and hope.  We are the flame that lights the way and warms the spirit and the soul.  Burning ever slowly, forever feeling the weakening clarity of our muted brilliance as the endless wind disguised as time attempts to change the course and strength that dwells inside.

The fury of the wind unleashed before the dawn of man, in the darkness of creation, before the first glimmer of the spark that turned into a flame.  There was only the wind, the candle and the darkness before there was the thought of me.

I hear the sound of the gathering wind as I watch the candle’s diming flame begin to fade.  I see the darkness as it descends and begins to consume the shadows of the burning flame.  I feel the coldness of the night as it blankets my heart and soul in images and memories that best be left beneath the specters of tortured moments and fractured visions that should not be lived again.

I have felt the wind across my face and smelled the scent of an extinguished candle as it’s flame flickers and slowly dies.  I have seen and felt the emptiness that is left behind when the wind, the candle and the darkness meet upon a killing field.  It is a blackness that overwhelms the heart and a sound of nothingness that pierces the human soul.  And there is a dimness and a dullness that permeates the days and time that follow.

There is a time for all things great and small to feel the wind and see and be the flame of life, if only for a moment or an instant.  To have known the brilliance of the flame and the warmth of its golden glow belies the tears and cries that have escaped from me.

The wind, the candle and the darkness -- the simplicity of birth, life, eternity.
