ALWAYS AND FOREVER

By Al Garcia

We are consumed with love and hate.  We conceive and deceive at every turn at every age.  We betray, and we protect as benefits ourselves.  And as we reveal the gentleness within, we conceal the ugliness that lies beneath the fabricated smiles that hide the scars of doubt, distrust and disdain.

We are a living contradiction, illogical and flawed.  We create the beauty that astounds us and surrounds us.  We conceive and devise the horrors and the terrors that makes us cry and breaks our human heart, like wars and battles that destroy and devastate the harmony of life.  We elaborate and formulate the angers, rivalries and hostilities that demolish the very breath and scope of dreams and of imagined wonders and marvels that overwhelm and wound the human heart.

The intensity of life is hard and cruel and even brutal, and challenges the body and the mind.  To witness the defeat of the human spirit is to feel the depth of sorrow and despair.  To sense and experience helplessness and weakness defines our vulnerability, susceptibility and sensitivity.  We are the sum of our achievements and of our failures.  And it is our failures that display the character and the strength of the totality of our lives and of our ability to care and to share.

We have all experienced lost first loves, and been betrayal by a friend, or heard the utterance of a lie that hurt deep down inside, or seen the innocence of youth slaughtered on a battlefield on a dark and gloomy day that never seems to end.  It is life unfurled, blemishes and all -- displayed, observed and felt.  It is what diminishes the confidence and composure that exhilarates and invigorates the innocence of youth and minimizes the certainty and serenity of insecure and anxious minds that reach that age when dreams begin to fade.

Life does not come easy, nor does it go out in glory.  Life is a test of endurance, of commitment and of faith.  Yet, each breath a gift to savor, each tear a memory to be cherished, and each joyful moment shared, a timeless splendor that delights and enchants.

We are creatures defined by time and bound by heaven and by earth.  We seek to reach beyond the stars that light the night, while we search the depths of human passion to feel the richness of each emotion that betrays and exults the best and worst of us.  And we strive among the smoldering ashes and vibrant memories of our past to feed the hunger of our devouring soul in search of meaning and of purpose.

We are consumed with emotions that humble us and empower us.  From the first embrace felt as a newborn child -- helpless and vulnerable -- to the waning days of life, when once again we find ourselves helpless and vulnerable, it is emotion that defines the beginning and the end.  And all the time between birth and death are moments cloaked in every kind and type of sentiments, reactions, passions and sensations – emotions that fuel and feed the need to feel and experience the texture that is life.

And in the end, it is emotion that keeps alive the essence of us, and the spirit of us.  It is the emotions shared – the love or dislike that we gave, the tenderness or unkindness that we shared, the warmth or the coldness that we displayed, and the compassion or the cruelty shown throughout our life that is the legacy of each of us.  Always and forever, the emotions shared and felt live beyond the grasp of time.

We are creatures of emotion and of devotion, with sentimental and cynical minds, romantic and quixotic hearts, and passionate and zealous souls.  We are a contradiction of the impossible and a paradox of the improbable, sharing moments that shape and alter the emotions that forever define us.
