Magnificent Obsession

By Al Garcia

There is an obsession within me – a magnificent obsession – to remember the voices now silenced, and to recall the unrealized dreams of those plucked from existence, without resistance – needless mortalities, brutal, barbaric, cruel and insane.

Forgotten faces and unwanted reveries in time of chaos and uncertainty.  No more fear, no more dreams, just the silence and nothing more.  What was once a son, a brother, a husband, a father, or a friend -- now just a painful specter in someone’s mind.  Mourned and remembered through rivers of flowing tears, and memories that will forever scar the heart and soul.

I am obsessed by the savagery and brutality of tactless and insensitive actions by arrogant men to extinguish the unrealized dreams and the great possibilities that could have been.  Humanity abandoned.  Compassion forsaken.

Slowly, we are willingly relinquishing the force and energy that burns inside of us.  We are becoming reluctant and redundant patriots in a misguided nation gone mad – ghoulish voyeurs ogling the obscenity of our own destruction and our own eventual tortured end.

I am obsessed, like we all should be, with the greatness of our past, and with the promises of glimpsing new horizons not yet discovered or imagined.  We are all obsessed with a fascination and a passion to savor each moment and to relish each passing season -- empowering and inspiring the uniqueness of our existence.  How could anyone consider relinquishing this power and this ecstasy that burns within?

To do so, would be to give up our magnificent obsession – life and dreams, and the intemperance of believing in wonderous horizons waiting beyond the rainbow.

We must look beyond the moment, and retake command of our runaway destiny, and revive the humanity that has burned strong and true through greater storms, and rains and dark of night.

Believe and live your magnificent obsession, for without it, dreams and new horizons will never come to be.
