THE AWAKENING

By Al Garcia

We are creatures of distinction and of genius.  Designed by dreams and conceived to feel the passion and the fury of time, and of emotions that define each passing moment.  We see more than what is shown, revealed or exposed by the light of day or the shadows of the night.  We hear what is left unspoken and unsaid, and hear the silent sounds that emanate from stars not yet formed.  We feel, we sense, we perceive more than what we accept or admit.  And we deceive more than we believe – in ourselves, in those that surround us, and in those that once imagined dreams that came to be.

We are creatures of habit and of addiction and tradition.  Accepting.  Compliant.  Consenting.  Afraid to see the truths that may lie beyond the daylight or behind the shadows of the night.  Fearful of listening to the screams of the human heart, or to the resonance of the echoes of time that cry out in despair.  And terrified to feel the hurt, the pain and the sorrow that comes from misguided or misplaced trust, belief or love.

This is who we have become.  Lonely, solitary creatures.  Afraid to live.  Afraid to die.  Afraid to reach out.  But most of all, afraid to be who we were meant to be, for fear of offending, disturbing or displeasing other sad and lonely people.

Have we forgotten that dreams were meant to be lived?  Dreams are the awakening of our consciousness.  We cannot live without exposing our hearts and souls to the world around us.  We cannot complete ourselves or fulfill ourselves until we let go of who we have become, and reveal and begin to live who we really are.

It is called the awakening. To come to the realization that there is more to life than simply living the habit, the addiction, the tradition, merely for acceptance and approval. If we are lucky, many of us will experience the awakening in time to begin to truly experience life as it was meant to be -- seeing, hearing, and feeling the exuberance, the energy, the excitement of being true to ourselves and to others.

Time to wake up and begin living. Time to live and fulfill the dream that is you.
