How many sunsets have I seen in my lifetime? How many times have I seen the sun touch the turquoise waves upon the sea and sink beneath the beauty of its pristine stillness? How many times did I marvel at the crimson colors of the setting sun, while standing in fields of glory and fields of toil and of drudgery?

I SAW THE SUNSET

By Al Garcia

How many sunsets have I seen in my lifetime? How many times have I seen the sun touch the turquoise waves upon the sea and sink beneath the beauty of its pristine stillness? How many times did I marvel at the crimson colors of the setting sun, while standing in fields of glory and fields of toil and of drudgery? It is the radiance of the ending day that illuminates the coming night and reminds me of the magnificence of the day just lived.

I see the brilliance of the horizon and feel it getting closer with each sunset that I see. For I am in the recesses of my life, when each sunset brings melancholy thoughts of all the days I wasted or ignored.  And I am awed by the majesty of the sunset.  For I know not if it is closing the doors to the heavens, or simply opening the approaching gates to the night and to dreams of leaving footprints on the sands of time.  Oh, how age has made me see beyond the sunset and beyond the boundaries of my life, into the approaching infinity that lies beyond the colors and the stars that light the sky and light the way.

It is the memory of being a part of the beauty of the sun embracing the advancing twilight that reignites my purpose and my dreams each day.  I am alive, and I see in each day the splendor that surrounds me and the grandeur that covers me with hope and promises of yet another day.

I saw the sunset, and it awakened the memories of my life.  How overwhelming to see and feel the beauty that lies beyond my reach, at least until the sunset touches my heart and soul, and I become a part of the splendor in the sky, before the twilight and before the darkness that will come.
