There is today in our land, the specter of division and cynicism. The American spectacle of prideful arrogance and pride, now shadowed by the approaching tide that threatens the bedrock of our stability, our constancy and our strength.

THE CORRUPTION OF OUR MINDS

There is today in our land, the specter of division and cynicism.  The American spectacle of prideful arrogance and pride, now shadowed by the approaching tide that threatens the bedrock of our stability, our constancy and our strength.  The very power that made our nation great, now the instrument of our impending upheaval and looming anarchy. 

It was mere words that set the course of our nation.  Words written with passion and with fervor for a state of mind that would soon be translated into a living, breathing state of being and perpetual state of grace – America.  An extraordinary experiment combining human decency, strengths, weaknesses, dreams, hopes, dignity, faith and power. 

And even then, so long ago, we agreed on the concept of coming together, working together, and sharing the power of governance that would ensure the security, the stability and the evolution of a dream that proclaimed the dignity of man, and the destiny of greatness. 

Today, we again find ourselves in a battle of words and minds, attempting to decide the course of our nation.  This time, unfortunately, there will be no winners or losers, just exhausted and disillusioned individuals left to wonder why the great men and great women of our time, who sit in the great halls of power, were not able to preserve or uphold the great words, ideals and ideas that 56 men so eloquently set forth on a piece of parchment -- an untitled document at that very moment, which began, “We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America” – a document we have lived by and through for generations -- the Constitution of the United States.

I have found that there is today in our land, a corruption of words and of minds.  Words that once had power and strength have been degraded to unrecognizable and inconvenient forms of their brilliant past – words such as “truth” and “facts.”  And so too, once open minds that sought knowledge, growth and wisdom, now mere shells of forgotten perception and astuteness.  And I am left to wonder what became of our ethical and moral principles and virtues. 

And after much thought and consideration it comes to me – POWER!  It is all about power.  I am reminded of the adage “Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.”  However, I am more inclined to agree with author William Gaddis, who wrote, “Power doesn’t correct people, people corrupt power.”  And so, the culprit of our dilemma is exposed – POWER and the greed of who seek power. 

I think John Steinbeck summed up what I just came to realize as the reality of our current situation.  Steinbeck wrote “Power does not corrupt.  Fear corrupts . . . perhaps the fear of a loss of power.” 

All Presidents enjoy and love the power and the adoration.  Congress worships the intrigue of power, money and celebrity (good or bad).  The Justice Department perceives itself as a protector of power, not the arbitrator of justice or legitimacy.  And the State Department prefers to trek across the globe flaunting its power to keep or break the norms that once defined the nation that we were meant to be.  All of them powerful.  All of them afraid to lose power.  All of the movers and shakers in Washington afraid to return to the normality of a regular life or a regular job.  And in the interim, We the People, suffer the consequences of their greed and their need for power.

The corruption of our minds and of our ability to think and process the words, deeds and actions of our elected officials will continue, unless we begin to understand and accept that truth is the truth, even if many do not believe it, and that a lie is a lie, even if everyone believes it.

It is our time to think again.  To believe again.  And to make America OUR America again.  Because we hold the ultimate power.  Because we are the People . . .
